Arowana Card - Endangered Ark
For my first fish/under water combo painting I am really proud of how this one turned out! I can look at it and see a bunch of things that could be improved upon but overall, for how much I struggled with it, I am really pleased with the overall result!

Arowanas are also known as Dragon Fish and hail from Asia. The name refers to multiple species (some of which grow amazingly large!) of river-dwelling fishes - endangered in big part because of the pet trade. These beautiful fish (which come in colors from blue and silver to bright red and gold) are highly valued by aquarium hobbyists. Aquaculturalists around the world are willing to pay thousands of dollars for rare specimens, with single fish fetching sums well over $10,000. Declining habitat is also a major factor.
My love of arowanas started when I worked for an exotic fish store for some years. Arowanas get very large, generally up to 3 feet and require a very large tank space (250+ gallons) that I was never able to provide. Maybe someday! :)

I love Arowanas! I took care of *so* many of these at my last job, at Aquarium Adventure. One of the kids nearly lost a finger to one of these guys! And they used to jump down into the crawlspaces between the filtration systems ALL the time.
Ornery little buggers. . . I did *not* like cleaning that tank.

That is so neat and sounds like an amazing job! I used to keep eels (freshwater sort) and they were *amazing* escape artists. Even with a heavy screen over the top they always seemed to find a way out one way or another. (Sometimes I was convinced they know how to beam themselves across a room.
I still keep bichir. . . commonly known as 'dinosaur eels'. I have a Polypterus Delhezi and a Polypterus Senegalis. They're monsters. . . my big one eats EVERYTHING. He's even tried eating the other eel, a few times. . . then promptly spat him out when he realized he was far too large. I can't keep anything else in that tank. . . but it's so worth it.
I'm a huge Cichlid fan, too. With a new place on the way, I might re-kindle the hobby. I'd love a long-nosed eel sometime in the future. . . like a fire eel or a tiretrack. . . I used to keep peacock eels, but you have to be so damned careful with the PH to keep them happy. . . .
*sigh* Someday, when I have time and money, again.

HOMG fish!!! I am a huge fish fanatic and used to work at this place called Aquarium Adventure. We had a 1.5 ft confiscated black arowana, gorgeous specimen with full grown gourami. I enjoyed feeding them very very much.
I'm back in school so work is out of the question again. So I have to settle for my mudskippers and archer fish, which are also fun to feed

Aah, I love archers! I had one for many years, they are so beautiful and fascinating. I miss aquarium keeping a lot - after a move where the movers dropped and destroyed my 75 gallon and two of my smaller tanks I had to give away my fish and have really, really missed them. I'm really looking forward to having the time to get back into it one day!
God I wouldn't trust a soul with any of my tanks. I nearly chewed off my hand when I ran out of finger nails when my dad, my boyfriend, and my sister's boyfriend moved the 125 into the basement, she's a heavy beast. I am so sorry that a dropped tank forced you out of the hobby.
My tanks keep only a few largish fish in them and the tanks have been running for years, so they are pretty pain free to manage now. I hope you get back into it, then we could trade fish pictures

There is currently 6 species of arowana, black, silver (the blue is a variation of the black i think), the african, asian, spotted and pearl. The first three are from the amazon and the spotted and pearl are australian
there are also 4 species of arapaima but they are lumped together as A.gigas
