C.N.S. OBLIVION
THE NEXUS
NULL TIME
“Core, how long until we reach Tigandris VI?”
“About 3 hours, Mike.”
“Good. Report anything that might come up.”
The C.N.S. Oblivion, along with the Orion, Vengeance, and Indomitable, glided smoothly through The Nexus, a section of Null-Space where time stands still. While people can still move around in The Nexus, time will not pass, nor will the people themselves age at all.
Bowser had since made his way to the bridge of the mammoth vessel, and sat beside Mike with a bored expression on his face.
“Say, Bowser…”
“Yeah, Mike?”
“Isn't it amazing how the Empire got to its current state? From a small colony of exiles to a trans-dimensional-spanning government? It's just incredible how far Creation has come over the years.”
“Indeed. It's certainly been a long time, hasn't it?” he replied with a grin.
Mike was referring to the true beginnings of the Empire. A voyage of one ship that began more than a thousand years before…the story of the ship known only as the Exodus...
X.E.S. EXODUS
CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, PLANET EARTH
0904 HOURS, JUNE 20, 2008 A.D.
“It’s the story of the century, ladies and gentlemen,” a newscaster reported. “These brave young men and women, calling themselves ‘Mages of Xyban,’ have volunteered as the first humans to explore the infinite reaches of space.”
It was a historical moment indeed. The people, calling themselves “Mages of Xyban,” were selflessly volunteering their lives to be the first humans to explore the possibility of a planet supporting life. After obtaining permission from the United States Government, the press went into a frenzy over these so-called “mages.” Their questions were numerous, but these are just a few of them:
· “How will you survive?”
· “Why are you doing this?”
· “What will you do if you do not find a suitable planet?”
But in truth, they already had found a suitable planet: by acquiring information from SETI, they had learned that an Earth-Sized planet with a possible atmosphere capable of supporting human life was discovered in the Manos System, a system some 50 light-years from Earth. To date, this was the nearest planet discovered that could feasibly support life.
Their ship, the Xybanian Expeditionary Ship Exodus, was equipped with technology to survive the journey, including stasis pods, an experimental magnetic acceleration drive (this would propel them to light speed), and equipment and tools necessary for colonization upon landing.
“We’ve just received the final countdown. These brave souls will be the first people to achieve a feat of such immense importance that has not been matched for almost 40 years.”
“All systems go. We are ready in Ten…”
All eyes fixed on the rocket that was to meet destiny…
“Nine…Eight…Seven…Six…Five…Four…Three…Two…One…Liftoff! We have Liftoff at five minutes after the hour!”
Onboard the ship…
“Ericson…”
“Yes, Aranoch?”
“Begin the process of getting everyone ready for the long, black sleep ahead.”
“Yes, sir.”
The tiny ship seemed to vanish as it escaped Earth’s orbit.
“And there they go, ladies and gentlemen. 50 of the bravest individuals humanity has ever known have started their fantastic journey; their fates are now known only to God.”
Meanwhile…
“Everyone, to your stasis pods. It’s going to be many years before we come out again.”
It was for a good cause, however. The Mages of Xyban were in fact Christians who had discovered the ability to use psionics. But they feared that their continued presence on Earth would make them targets of terrorists and mob bosses and the like. They feared that, if captured, they would be forced to use their wondrous God-given abilities to wage a new kind of warfare. They decided, then, that their presence was too great a threat to humanity, and they would have to seek refuge, away from the threat of war. The next 50 years would be spent in stasis, as they waited for their final descent.
X.E.S. EXODUS
HIGH ORBIT OVER UNKNOWN PLANET, MANOS SYSTEM
1521 HOURS, AUGUST 3, 2058 A.D.
[Destination achieved. Disengaging Stasis Mode.]
The time had arrived at last. The Mages of Xyban had at last reached their final destination; the planet described in SETI’s report so many years ago.
“Time to bring her in. All hands, prepare for impact!”
The Exodus began her descent down to the surface of the planet. It lit up the sky with a brilliant flash as it rocketed in towards its chosen impact zone.
“Strap yourselves in, ladies and gentlemen; this is gonna be a wild ride!”
The force of the impact was strong enough to gouge out a 100-foot diameter crater from the planet. The Exodus was now damaged beyond repair, but Aranoch, the leader, was satisfied; it was their intention all along to crash-land on the planet. They could now continue their work and carry on their lives in secret. The first order of business was to commemorate the historic event.
“This planet is the seventeenth of thirty planets in this star system. In honor of our clan, I propose the name Xyber XVII,” Aranoch announced. A unanimous vote in favor of the idea ended the matter.
From Obsidian they had harvested from the planet’s surface, the Xybanian Mages created their monument: a 5x5 grid of obelisks they named the Obelisks of Fate. It would be these obelisks that would both serve as a reminder to their race, and a deterrent to outsiders. In only four years, it was ready for its first test run.
“Aranoch, we’re ready for the test-fire. Permission?”
“Permission granted, Lowell. Aim for that outcropping to the south. Fire!”
The obelisks hummed to life. All of the 24 outer obelisks focused their energy on the central obelisk. A blinding light shot from the spire and decimated the outcropping.
However, shortly therafter…
“Aranoch, something’s happening. The electromagnetic detectors are going off the charts!”
It appeared that their monument of success had been built on top of an unstable electromagnetic anomaly. By firing the weapon, they had unknowingly given the anomaly that final push to spiral out of control. Bluish beams of light began rippling through the previously lavender-colored sky. The planet quaked violently, and the Mages could only wait…and hope they would survive…
