I can't help but feel like their meant to find an option C or at least start looking for one. A compromise, between the "natural" and "unatural". But maybe that's just me wanting them all to make it into the modern day in some form.
Seriously can you picture Innsmouth's in an age where the world has caught up with their weird. Like the Shape of Water just came out, you can order literally anything, and cosplay & furries are so well known it's possible they could walk down the street in broad daylight if they really had to.
