Everything works on an in-game currency that I forget the name of.
There are 'locations' you can go in SL (Think 3d Rendered Chatrooms that can be designed/landscapes ext) where people can set up interactive shops. And sell certain models ext. It's a bit of a business, much like commissions.
A 'model' so to speak is a mesh your character 'wears', changing it. The in game customisation is different to what you'll be used to in other games, in that it's a tad more complicated, but I hear it's easy once you get into it.
