Story start:
My name, is Shana.
I am 16 years old…. A little late to be starting the pokemon journey, but not unreasonable considering. I’ve been sick for a long time.
Today, I’m finally moving back home from the hospital. My hair has started growing back, too, it’s nearly to my ears now, and I’m starting to get the color back in my face. I step off the bus in front of the stop, and move down the road, settling my backpack on my shoulder. Mother had arranged a meeting with the local professor this morning. Apparently she didn’t want me around or something, or she’d have at least given me a week to prepare.. The car parked in front of the house isn’t mother’s…
I walk up to the door and open it, peering inside. Mother is in the kitchen, and the professor is seated at the table. Oh… okay… so that’s who’s car it was.
What happens next is a rush. So much talking… crying, joyful voices. “My little girl is finally free to travel’ and “I have a selection of pokemon for you” and me just… dumbfounded. Okay… Well… let’s see what we have.
Mudkip… a Water ground type… I had to admit… the idea of a pokemon that was practically immune to everything but grass types was rather nice…
Torchic, a fire fighting type… Meh… I never was a fan of fighting types… they always seemed way too punchy for my tastes…
And Treecko… The only single type on the list… grass… why… would I ever pick something so monotone as that? I guess that meant I was picking Mudkip. That was fine. I liked the little mudpuppy anyway.
IT… no… he seemed cheerful enough, and I ruffled the spines on his cheeks affectionately. “Kito… I’ll call you Kito.” I smiled and laughed as it burbled at me.
With the selection behind me, I murmured to mother that I was heading to bed, and would leave come morning. She nodded, promising a hearty breakfast, and to pack me a bag full of useful things. I believed her. She didn’t want me DEAD, she just wanted me to learn about the world… it was tradition, and with chemo having taken six years of my life away, it was long since time for me to head out.
The next morning was a cheerful one. Bright and sunshiney, and as I stepped out the door, the backpack heavy on my shoulders and Kito by my side, I smiled. What adventures would await me out there… What terrors and friendships would I find and face? Well… suffice to say, I wasn’t a hero… no grand adventures awaited me… just… traveling, battles, and maybe, just maybe, I’d challenge the gyms. Who knew.
