And now for something completely different.
Assignment for Digital Styles class. We had to pick a style that we admired and then cross it with something else that we created a different way than the first piece (for example, if we painted one part, another part would have to be created via a method other than painting). I've always admired good graffiti art and artists, so I ran with it.
Graffiti parts are 3D, sketch part was done referencing a photo I had taken of my own hand. 3D was created in Blender, rendered for two minutes via Blender internal at 2800x1200. Compositing done in Photoshop CS2.
The background texture is from a Google image search. The blog below the picture result frame nets me no links to the actual texture, so I don't know to whom I owe proper credit. If you know, give me a shout.

LESSON ONE: GO HERE.
But nah, honestly most of the basics and intermediate stuff I just picked up by playing around with the software and reading the manual. I can give you some of those sweet little industry tips (not that I'm in the industry yet, but meh) that'll give your stuff an easy boost.

I have Blender, but I haven't ever used it. I need to work up a little set in the near term with a few reflection effects that I only know how to do in 3DS Max. That would be my only real concern in switching right now. I'm not a strong modeler with any program, but that's due to lack of experience more than anything. I use Max, but I'm no expert with it to say the least. I'd be open to try modeling with any program.
I'd really appreciate any tips you'd be willing to share if you warna talk on AIM sometime =D

Check out any of Fairlight's PC demos within the past 5 years and you'll find a style with an influence extremely similar to your picture -- 3d graffiti lines intertwining over a dithered background.

all of fairlight's demos should be available on pouet.net and are a good test of your computer's graphic capabilities, as they're rendered in realtime
