she will not come back, she will not come back
though the stars hang their tears in the trees
And tireless Orion lies spent in his tracks
she will not come back
she will not come back to me
~Dave Carter
In 2006 the Baiji, or Yangtze River Dolphin, was declared functionally extinct. This means that if there are baiji still alive, the population is too small to sustain a healthy genetic pool for continued survival. There is still a chance these fine creatures will pull through but the odds are slim.
In Chinese mythology the baiji is the reincarnation of a princess who was drowned for not marrying a man she did not love. The River took pity on the poor girl and brought her back as the Goddess of the River. The baiji is a symbol of peace and prosperity.
It's too late for baiji. Hundreds of people tried to save them, bless them, but they couldn't. Efforts are now in motion to save the other endangered cetecean in the Yangtze River, the finless porpoise.
I pledge all print proceeds will go to the Baiji Foundation which works to conserve the fauna and flora of the Chinese waterways. Small 8 by 11's are 15, large,, 11 by 16 ish are 40. Shipping is 4 dollars.
Painted for the Endangered Ark project.

Maybe we're not responsible for each extinction, but as the dominant species in nature, particularly where the Yangtze River is concerned, we're a far cry from having zero impact. We're playing our role, and sometimes, we suck at it. Nature strives for diversity in life. Humans tend not to.
Nature dictates the survival of the fittest. It is not our repsonsibility as the greater race to look after the races we dominate, in nature. We do so because, in our complex sentient lives, we feel grief, guilt, and a misplaced sense of mercy, pity, and justice to be the "good guy". Downright speaking; Nature is about evolution, constant bettering of the species onward, forever. We don't not have an impact on the ecosystem, but it shouldn't be expected of any other person to give a damn about 'preserving' what is naturally dictated as obsolete.
BEautiful but the Endangered ark program doesn't say they give the money to Baiji Foundation, just WWF and parrots.org and only 10% of sales. I give money to WWF already and would love a print of this, to support the Baiji Foundation, but need confirmation of it going there first. Love ya, just very careful about charity money.
As long as China continues it's headlong rush into wanting to be "civilized" and "modern" and be more like the "west", they will continue plunging their country and this world into oblivion. I live in the Seattle area and YEARS ago they were sampling the snow on Mt Rainier for pollutants. They found pollutants up there that were banned in the US decades ago. They are being blown by the winds from China. So, their effect is not just localized and in their own country. We are seeing the effects of their rush to industry, their blindness and greed right here in the U.S.
