A commission story for
MichaelGrey about how Judy on Valentines Day starts to question if she and Nick is really nothing but friends.
Back to Zootopia again already. XD
But in all seriousness this was a really great story to make, as I think that Judy and Nick's relationship is probably on the best ones that Disney has ever made, since even after movie you can never really tell if they are actually lovers or not. (Giving fans like me pretty of moments to play around with it. )
This story ended up aroung 3300 words, which made it a commission costing 23$ to be made.
All of Zootopia is a property of Disney.
Lots of stuff had happen in Judy's life since coming to Zootopia.
She had gone from writing tickets as a meter maid to trying to solve a case with a disappearing otter in just a few days, managing to find not just said otter but also about a dozen other missing mammals, revealing a huge complot to try and make all predators look bad so that preys could rule the town, and at one point she even got offered the role as chief of the Zootopian Police!
But probably the biggest thing that had happen to Judy was that she had ended up getting a truly great friend through this.
Nick Wilde.
He who once had been nothing but a con-artist had throughout this journey not only ended up as fellow police officer, but also a very great friend for Judy.
This was all a bit funny now thinking about it a few months afterwards, knowing that one of Judy's oldest memories about meeting a fellow Fox ended up with her getting scratched at the cheek, and before even getting onboard the train to take her to Zootopia her parents had been insisting her to bring several "Anti-Fox" products to make sure they would keep a safe distance away from her. (Really shows what can happen once you get a chance to learn a lot more about others.)
"And now I am both friend and college with a fox. My old self would have called me crazy for saying that." Judy thought to herself as she was getting herself ready to leave her tiny apartment, and head towards her job.
As she was walking down the streets of Zootopia the bunny cop could tell that it was defiantly THAT day of the year.
It was Valentines Day, and it could be seen in how there was hanging heart shaped garlands over every street, and how there was confects and Love cards being sold in every street corner.
Judy loved how this once a year holiday was helping brining so many different types of animals together, and that no matter if they both where of completely different species their true love would still be all that was counting.
This was even true at the Zootopian Police Station, where several of the staff rooms was decorated with lots of hearts (Including one big one that someone had dared hanging up outside on the door to Chief Bogo's office!), and everyone had a lot more then usual friendly approach towards each other.
Upon entering the building the first thing that Judy did was to leave a friendly Valentines Day card to Benjamin Clawhauser, the obese cheetah that was working as the Dispatcher for the station.
The very flabby feline was more then excited when seeing the card the rabbit was giving him (As was evident by the way he was holding his paws over his mouth, and how his tail was lifting up.), and in return he couldn't help but joke a little by asking if this meant they two now where "an item"?
Judy in return replied in the same joking manner that she was already "Busy with Nick", before giving Clawhauser a wink and leaving.
Once left alone the fatted cheetah just casually said "Yeah, okay then." to the bunny cop as she left, but then he suddenly got serious as he shouted "You where joking, right?!" after Judy. (But she was already to far gone by then.)
Sitting left alone the cheetah didn't fully know what to make out of Judy's comment about her and Nick being together, and his indecision with himself started to draw some attention as Officer Higgins (A Hippo cop that was Clawhauser's best friend, as they both had about the same body sizes.) couldn't help but ask him what it was he was pondering about.
He told him that he was believing that Judy & Nick was secretly in a relationship with each other (And that he wasn't fully sure about all the facts.), and Higgins just said a very causal "Oh okay. That's nice for them.", before walking off and thinking to himself, "I just have to tell all my colleagues this!"
Pretty soon word went from mouth to mouth, and with each passing of the story it went from a rumour, to a fact, to a long time secret that these two had been keeping hidden for as long as they had been both joined at the force! (All during the course of this same day even!)
Eventually this rumour had reached all the way up to even Officer Bogo's horns, and the very strong build Buffalo was not very pleased with what he had been hearing!
Later in the afternoon he had been gathering all of his working officers in the meeting room, where he had an old square TV on a moving table prepared.
"It has come to my attention that SOME officers has been having a secret romance going on at this station!" The police chief said very strenly to nobody in particular. (But still had some of his focus on the Bunny & Fox sitting next to each other.)
"And amongst the many things I have heard that these two love birds has been doing while at service is using the Police radios to have romantic calls, borrowed one of our Police cars to drive out and have a little picnic together, and even having been MAKING OUT in the supply closet!" Bogo said, and sounded REALLY upset once mentioning that last part!
"While I don't have any proof to withhold any of these crimes or the ones having done them, I am not going to let this pass by. This is why I have been gathering you all here, so that I can share with you a little video as to remind CERTAIN officers how to NOT behave while on duty!" Bogo said as he pressed the "Start" button on his remote so hard that he almost crushed the whole thing!
The film started to play and it was a instructional video on "Relationships Between Police Partners.", and it showed how it could look like when two fellow officer let some of their personal life mix in with their professional work ethnics.
In this case it was showing how a male Rhino and a female Elephant (Not to be confused with the male Rhino and female Elephant that they actually had on the Zootopian force.), and how their love for each other was both distracting them from doing their work properly, and how it was also affecting their colleagues all around them.
Since it was a very simple "Keep your personal stuff at home" message the film was not more then 8 minutes long, and once done Bogo said one last "I hope it is all much more clear now." message to his group, before letting them all walk out again.
Getting out from the meeting room both Nick and Judy couldn't help but notice how all of the taller animals was looking down at them slightly and whispering small sentence towards each other.
"Crazy day, huh Carrots?" Nick said as he tried to make sense of everything that has happen so far this very special Valentines Day.
"No kidding! Couldn't help but notice how Bogo several times during his speech seemed to be spending extra attention on us two." Judy said, as she didn't like to gets watched by all the others so strangely.
"Indeed he did." Nick said as he almost was trying to crack this as an actually case to solve. "Any ideas on why there seems to be so much attention around the two of us?"
"Not really no. All I remember doing earlier today was that I talked to Clawhauser and...Oh Clawhauser!" Judy said as she realised just how this whole mess might have started.
"What? What did you and Clawhauser do?" Nick asked.
"I just told him as a joke that you...and me...kinda was a couple." Judy explained, and Nick made a pretty good impersonation of his old friend Flash the Sloth, as just like with Flash Nick's face slowly went from confused to laughing out loud once he placed all the pieces together.
"It's not that funny Nick!" Judy said as she didn't like how she was being laughed at so much by her colleague. (And partner, if you where to believe everyone else.)
"You must admit that it is a little bit funny how some random gossip rumours about us managed to become the main thing that all of the station was talking about, all during the course of the same day no less!" The fox said as he was trying to hold himself from falling over of laughter. "It wasn't that bad to have the other cops believe it, right?"
"It's not the others thoughts that is so bothering. It is just..." Judy said before having a bit of a hard time.
"It's what?" Nick asked.
"It's just that after saying that thing to Clawhauser I am still not fully sure if was actually joking or not." Judy said.
"So, what does that mean?" Nick asked unsure.
"This is going to sound crazy, but I suggest that we two should...try having a romantic evening together." Judy finally said, leaving the fox very empty for clever remarks.
"It's just as a test Nick! We go to a restaurant, watch a movie together, and then afterwards we will know if we have a connection or not." Judy explained, and Nick was just very quiet for a few moments before saying "Shall I pick you up at 5?"
Judy had to blink her eyes a few times and check with her ears to be sure she had understood him correctly before asking, "You are actually okay with this?!"
"The last thing I would want is for my bunny buddy to be feeling confused and unsure about her feelings all day." Nick said, which made Judy a little bit teary-eyed as she gave him a big hug.
"Are you saying that to me as your friend or as your love?" She asked, to which Nick casually responded "Guess we will know for sure after our "date"."
After work Judy felt more excited then she had ever been for most of her life.
Not since wondering if she would pass on her final exams and finally become a cop had she been this curious about results.
Not since today had she fully been thinking about her relationship with Nick before.
She had never seen him as more then a nice friend and police partner that you could tell everything to, and that would always be there for you. But now she also started to imagine living together with him, and the more and more she thought about it he seemed like the man she really would want to spend the rest of her life with him.
"Wow. That I would actually turn into the girl stereotype that wont spot being upset about a certain guy." Judy thought as she found herself having spent 20 minutes on how to let her ears lay down from when to getting picked up by Nick later.
Around 5 Judy was waiting outside in a not to shabby red dress as she saw Nick riding up next to the crosswalk. She was a bit taken that he was seen driving what seemed like a very expensive looking Cadillac Convertible!
"My, my, aren't you looking very beautiful tonight?" Nick asked as he walked out (Revealing himself to be wearing what seemed like a very expensive suit.) and open up the door for her, to which Judy replied "Thanks, you too." as she got herself inside.
As they where heading towards the place for their "romantic dinner date" Judy couldn't help but get a little bit suspicious about things.
"Nick? Where exactly did you get this car from?" She asked, and he calmly said back "I had Finnick get me a good ride to borrow for the night."
This of course made Judy's "Cop Senses" go on full speed, and seeing the very suspicious looks she was giving him he had to explain himself by saying, "I was extra clear to tell him to got get it to me in any illegal ways. I just have to make sure that I get this thing back to him in one piece, and then neither of us will be in any trouble."
Judy still didn't like the sound of it, but she knew that with Nick he would often do crazy stuff that he still would somehow get out of unhurt of. (Most of the times.)
"Wonder if sharing every day of my life with such a risk taker would be worth it?" She thought, as she was going back now to just liking him to be a distant friend.
After only a few minutes of driving Nick had taken them both to "Pride Rock", which was a place where everything had a very "African" tone to it.
Nick and Judy looked a little bit odd in their very high classed clothes at a place that had high grass and rocks as parts of it's decor, but they still made themselves comfortable as they sat down at their table.
Judy ordered a salad to herself, while Nick had a fish dish.
As they where eating Judy noticed how Nick had a lot more "finesse" to his dinning. (Lord knows how "wild" he could be eating at times at the Police Cafeteria.)
"Where did you learn to act so swab and elegant?" Judy asked curiously.
"When doing something for you I always want to try and be at my very best." Nick simply answered, which made Judy's heart melt in return.
"Sometimes he is so kind-hearted and nice that I can't understand why I didn't feel like this before!" She thought as she found herself barley touching her food and just keeping her eyes at Nick.
Later at the cinemas Nick had chosen what he thought would be a perfect film for him and "his girl" to watch and cuddle to together.
It was called "Hustle Sweethearts", and it was being described as "A Buddy-Cop Comedy with a Romantic twist."
As they where watching it the both real life cops couldn't help but draw parallels to certain events that had been happening when they first meet each other.
"You have only 48 hours to find out where the drug lord and his gang is hiding out, or you will lose your badge!" The angry Police commissioner was shouting at the male Coyote Cop that was in his office.
"Did they just copy and paste Cheif Bogo, or what?" Nick asked Judy, who just giggled uncontrollably before asking him to be quiet so she could hear the next scene.
"And that's not all! Since I know that you can be a bit of a loose cannon at times officer Mullic, I am pairing you up with our newest part of the crew. Officer Shanning!"
And right on spot a female Black Panther cop entered the room, and the male Coyote was immediately not pleased with this.
"Oh I think I know this one! They will hate working with each other, but in the end they will still end up as the love couple." Judy said, and couldn't help but laugh over how easy it was to point out many of the plot points in this movie.
That, and also how many of the "dangers" seen in the film meant nothing really to Nick and Judy, since they had been experiencing some of their own when they saved Zootopia. (Preventing a whole plan to make all citizens fear predators felt a lot more "Unique" of a setting then simple drug dealers for example.)
In the end neither Nick and/or Judy spend much time in the arms of the other one, as they both had to much fun making fun of the film.
For Judy it all felt now like she was hanging out and having a good time with her best friend, more then being on a date with the love of her life.
Then in the end it was the typical Romantic kiss between the two lead characters, and upon seeing the male and female cop kissing each other Judy suddenly got silent.
"All of these emotional shifts are almost starting to get ridiculous now! Do I love him or not?!" Judy was thinking to herself as she looked at Nick once more. "I just hope I get a clear and final answer by the end of it all."
After the movie Nick drove Judy back to her apartment, and before leaving they both shared a very special moment.
"Thanks Nick. For what it was, it was actually a really great date." Judy said as she looked deeply into the eyes of her foxy man.
"To see you having a good time was all that really mattered." Nick said as he too couldn't stop looking closer at his bunny girl.
Closer, and closer, and...
KISS!
There was dead silent moment as the two of them just started at each other, knowing full well that they had just kissed each other on the mouth.
Nick was the one to first break the silence by asking, "So...did you feel anything?"
Judy had to think for a few seconds before saying a very confident, "No. I don't think there was any sparks there."
"Then it is settled then. We two are just really great friends." Nick said very casually, which Judy got a little confused about.
"Aren't you sad about that?" She asked carrying, to which the fox explained that he "Was happy being in her present as either a friend or a lover.", and that it was "You who had been the one needing to figure this from the start."
Knowing that she at least always would have such a carrying friend like Nick by her side truly made Judy know that she was one lucky rabbit.
"See ya tomorrow, Carrots." Nick said as he got into his car and drove off.
"See ya, you sly Fox." Judy replied.
Today had truly been one crazy Valentines day for Judy.
From being thought of to have a relationship with Nick, to actually go on a date with him, and finally kiss him right outside her home had all been one heck of a rollercoaster of emotions.
"I barley even had time to unpack my bag when I got back home." Judy thought as she saw her backpack from work just tossed into a corner.
Upon empty it on content a small card ended up falling out of it.
"I wonder what this can be?" Judy thought as she picked it up and read it.
"Hey Judy. I don't know if you want to...but I would want to become my Valentine? I am aware that I barley meet you...and I know that this is crazy...but here is also my number...so you can call me...maybe. Sign Clawhauser." (And then there was also an actual phone number left by Clawhauser.)
At first Judy was wondering how a Valentines Day card from Clawhauser has ended up in her bag, but then she remembered that the big cheetah probably sneaked it in while she was talking to him in the morning.
"Did he actually have a crush on me all this time? And when I told about Nick to him he might have even been "Jealous"?" Judy asked herself.
After reading it again she started to think if it was possible that she had ever felt something special for him...before deciding "Nah", and putting the card down again.
"He is just a friend to me. Just like Nick."

Back to Zootopia again already. XD

Love the story! While I am big on shipping Judy and Nick ( probably the only Disney couple with biggest chemistry!), I also support the interpretation that they are just very good buddies.
The only criticism I have is only on Chief Bogo, though it is more so based on my own interpretation of that character. While he is strict and no-nonsense, I never saw him as having bad temper. Personally, I would see him being more lowkey aggressive at the situation, implying but not outright stating his annoyance. I notice how many just portray him as very angry and uptight, despite of how tolerant he acted in the film towards Clawhauser and his "playfull" side at the end of the movie.

You're welcome!
And not a problem, he does seem easily to fall into that stereotype, so I don't blame anyone for thinking so. I mean the movie set him up as this cliche bad boss stereotype, but as part of its message on stereotyping, showed that he is much more reasonable than he lets on! Nevertheless, hope to see more from you.
