Our stage opens on a youth, simply going about his normal day on a space station orbiting a far off planet. We get the impression that he is curious and mischievous, and he jokes with his friends as he meets them in the hall on the way to some unknown destination. One by one, they branch off onto their own path until he is all alone again. He gulps, anxious.
The hatch he comes to opens and his mother is there, and she scolds him for being late, then smiles and rests a hand on his shoulder before handing him an exo-suit. His heart racing, he puts it on and seals it before looking back to his mother for direction. The room seals and they are alone. "Are you ready?" she asks, comfortingly. The fear is in his eyes, but he nods and she takes his hand. The external airlock hisses open and reveals the infinite black of space, with the bright and shimmering orb below them. He feels his feet leave the ground, and tightly grasps his mother's as she uses handholds and her feet to softly ease them from the station. It's so quiet, and it frightens him.
Then, though, he glimpses the full magnitude and majesty of the planet in his vision, and his trembling is replaced with awe. His mother's presence anchors him and tells him this is so real, and while that helps him breathe it also adds to the beauty by reminding him that all of this splendor exists with him.
His mother spins the two of them, and as he smiles through his visor at her and she back at him, he realizes that the imagery which has him so dumbstruck exists within all of us, in the love we feel for each other, in the desire we have for happiness, and in the determination to overcome and move forward.
Many years later, a little girl rushes through the same hallway, to the same airlock, which slides open and reveals her father there, ready to change her in much the same way.
You are all beautiful.
