After a few hours chilling in my college prep class I got an idea for this little goof of a character. I like the big yellow hoodie but I still want to mess around a bit with the rest of the color scheme. I feel like it'll be kinda cool to post these as I go like this because there's a lot of stuff I'm still hammering out here and I think it might be fun to document it. I'm probably going to have a page of doodles up soon of failed designs for him. He was almost a tiny armless fox creature, or he would have arms but hid them in a hoodie, or she'd have feathered wings attached to her arms.
We were talking about sign-language and I started thinking about a deaf person who couldn't or didn't want to bother learning it, and instead communicated through doodling in a sketchbook like I used to talk to my art teacher when I took a class in Mexico and there was a big language barrier.
In BoomBox's case I'm still working on where to put her but I'm thinking it will be some sort of post-apocalyptic, dystopian, or just generally industrial, flawed setting. Whatever it is though, I know I want him to be living alone in like a big junk-yard hideout, full of cool stuff she finds in the rubbage. He's somewhere between 10 and 16 I'm thinking and I'm not sure about whether I want her parents to be dead, or just MIA. Either way, it wouldn't be a massive plot point, at least not in his general behavior. She would have been separated from them for a long time and mostly just focus on his own situation. I'm also not sure how I exactly want the whole deafness to have been caused, I know I want it late enough in his life that she had developed a love of music though, hence the name (also gained by the fact that, in addition to being deaf, BoomBox is mute, with the exception of the occasional exclamatory sound. Usually a very loud one in a rather scratchy voice) She still wears his headphones around a lot though either on or around her neck and often turns the music up to full blast on them just for.....well, none of her companions would know. Likely for the vibes. I feel like personality-wise he would be sort of quirky and eccentric, seemingly oblivious to what anyone else thought and just doing her own weird, weird thing. He knows more than he lets on though and is a pretty smart cookie despite the fact you can't really bring her in public.
I have a lot to think about.
