...because people keep pouring out of it.
Last year we they gave us a VW Jetta as a rental for our trip along the West Coast. So this ime I asked the guy at the desk: "Hey... don' you have some real American experience available?" He just grinned and dropped me the keys to this aircraft carrier sized Chevrolet Suburban with A/C seats, collision warning system, electric trunk door and propably autopilot and a personal butler living in the glove compartment.
It takes a while to fill the gas tank, enough for my wife to call in a local hydraulic lifting ramp to access the front screen, so that she can clean it of flys, bugs, aligators and elks... just the usual stuff that you keep collecting without even fully taking notice of it.
So what say you? Which car should we have taken as a rental for the full American Experience?

The Suburban is especially popular in Texas, so much so that General Motors advertised it for several years as The National Car of Texas.
If it's got air-conditioned seats, you have one of the higher trim levels available. The sticker price not hat truck is probably north of $60K, maybe $70K. And you've already met what it costs to fill the tank...
Still, for some folks, it's the only vehicle that fits all of their mission requirements.
Me, I'll stick with my Mercedes.

As for a genuine American experience...now that you've been at both ends of the spectrum, I'd suggest a Buick LaCrosse or Chrysler 300 for your next trip. Quiet, comfortable, and the gas tank won't require the GDP of three third world countries to fill. (The Ford Taurus is comparable, but I wouldn't wish a Ford on my worst enemy.)
Or a midsize SUV, like a Buick Enclave or Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Again, the Ford Explorer is comparable, but see earlier comment.)
As for that Jetta...I think it probably would have been built in Tennessee...just like my Mercedes ML320 was built in Alabama. I still get to cuss at German engineers, though.
