In 1928, guitarist George Beauchamp and instrument maker John Dopyera formed the National String Instrument Company and designed the resonator guitar. A year later, Dopyera left National to form the Dobro Manufacturing Company with his four brothers. Today,resonator guitars are often referred to as “Nationals” or “Dobros” regardless of the manufacturer.
