Alley Cat Blues Options
OKAY! After getting the idea for Alley Cat Blues, and doing a poll on another site which gave me results that were kind of close, someone here gave me the idea to just draw out character concepts and see which was best. I know THIS isn't exactly a fair image, since the character's hair style makes her look kind of youngish ^^; So, the boobs may look...not right, but, I just wanted to give it a shot and hash it out so people could see. I got a suggestion to create a poll in my journal (haven't figured that out, yet ^^; ) so, I'm gonna figure that out and ask folks to vote. If you want to vote here, that's fine, too. I had a poll on another site and the results were kind of close. I wanted to wait until I got the chance to do a drawing before asking folks here SO! Now I've done the sketch and am gonna ask you for your opinions
Now, this isn't for THIS particular character, it's for the overall look of the series. Would the cats look better without hair and clothes (opt. 1) or would they look better with hair (opt. 2) or, maybe better with hair and clothes (opt. 3) or, would they be better with hair, clothes and genitals/breasts (opt. 4) That's the dilemma, so I'm just asking around to see what people think
Thanks a bunch in advance!
INFO AND INSIGHT INTO ALLEY CAT BLUES:
Although these are anthro cats, they've got characteristics of their non-anthro kin. For example, these cats do not live in houses or cook. They eat out of the garbage, or the flesh of rats that they catch, or any other means that a cat would utilize to attain food. They sleep under cars or on rooftops and live, essentially, as cats do.
The only real thing that would be different would be their relationships to each other. I do want to maintain the fact that there is typically one male who has his territory and the females that live therein would be his to mate with so long as he isn't beaten by some other tom. However, he has a favorite female and the story would focus on her and her children whom, when they get older, would have to leave her and venture off on their own.
I'm a HUGE romantic so, unlike real cats in this situation, I want them to be able to fall in love and have that sort of relationship with someone. What I was thinking is that one of her daughters isn't in agreement with the "sharing the one male" thing and decides that when she takes a mate, her mate is hers and hers alone! She's not sharing!
Another story could center around one of her sons who finds his own territory and becomes the dominant male, and has many mates and subsequently, many children.
The other stories would follow her other children and so on and so forth.
So, in some respects, they're very feral and feline, yet in other respects, they've got some human traits.

Oh, no no! I'm sorry! I'm a nut! I should have clarified. This isn't for this character specifically, it's for ALL the characters. This sort of...chart...is to determine whether or not ALL the cats in this story will have hair, or no hair, clothes or no clothes, genitals/breasts or no genitals/breasts. I think she looks a bit like a child, so the boobs don't really fit her, but her mother, for example, would she do better with or without them, or with or without hair. Sorry about the mix-up. I'll fix that, now.
Thank you! *glomps* But, I made a little mistake in the description. The chart here isn't for this particular character, it's for the look of the entire series. I'm trying to determine whether or not ALL the characters will have hair, or wear clothes or have genitals/breasts or not. So, there are four character types that could play out and I wanted to see what people thought would be best for the story I'll fix that in the description, now. Sorry about that
Oh ok, well the style is awesome as ever too. I mean as far as girl characters hair and boobs sets them apart from the guys. The clothes helps with the character's style and also sets them apart. If you didn't want to go as far as clothing I'd use hair to set the characters apart but the clothing also makes them seem a lil more "complete" in a way. ^_^
Going by your brief story idea in your earlier journal I was half expecting the characters to be more feral than anthro. Somewhere along the lines of Watership Down or the Rats of NIHM. I see that now they will have a more anthro design to them.
About the character designs: From what you've already mentioned in your story idea is that there will be different generations of characters ranging from children, adult and possibly even the elderly. So depicting them to be youthful, mature and old is the most important part.
By your initial character designs I can see you're lending them more human-like qualities and most likely situations to tackle in the story. How much like humans and the types of situations will determine whether to give them clothing or not. Especially if they have a developed world with social structure and technology.
Sorry if I sound long-winded.
My choices are #2 and #4.
#2 If they live in a more basic world.
#4 if they live in a more advanced world. This would be more plausible if they wore clothing and had physical development which detailed age progression of the characters involved.
Personally, for anthro characters I like #4 for the reason that a young girl/boy will be undeveloped and in clothing appropriate for their age group. Likewise to see a mature set of adults. Therefore having breasts wouldn't be out of the ordinary. The elderly becoming more grey in fur coloration and bending in posture with perhaps walking aids.
Hopefully I made some kind of sense and wasn't too wordy or confusing. *chuckles*
Keep up the character concepts and work as close to the design you intend for the story!

That made total sense to me and I fully understand what you're getting at! I remember reading Watership Down and although it's a FANTASTIC story ( I actually bought the book after we had to read it in grade school) it's not exactly what I'm going for here. They're just a little more human, but, not fully.
For example, these cats do not live in houses or cook. They eat out of the garbage, or the flesh of rats that they catch, or any other means that a cat would utilize to attain food. They sleep under cars or on rooftops and live, essentially, as cats do.

I think for what your going for that #2 would be a better fit.
Clothing is unnecessary to portray your characters, but for certain special characters or those that happen to be wiser or something else significant might posses a single item to define them or even show some sort of status. Although completely not needed, ad only if you think it would not take away from the elements of the story and/or the characters.

It's alright, I'm stuck as well Thank you, though! *hugs* Hmm...maybe this will help you. It's from a conversation that I was having with Callicat_Merlin:

You know, I've gotten that response. Sorry about that. But, yeah, I totally wanted them to be anthro, but with dominating cat qualities. But, being that they are extremely cat-like, I wasn't sure which route to go with them. I asked a bunch of folks and it's very close between opt. 2 & opt. 4
Looking at all four of them, I have to say that I think you should combine 1 and 4 I don't know that they should have hair persay but they should have gender differences. At least in the adults. Though I'm sure which ever idea you choose it'll be wonderful. I look forward to seeing your decision.
I'd need to know a bit about the aesthic "feel" of the alley cat blues environment before I could recommend any of these illustrations. All of them are very strong though! The story concept is interesting, I'm another hopeless romantinc myself. And I am having similar trouble. I have made a few preliminary character model sheets for my "Androy" comic. However the characters look too old, and at the start they are late teens. I'm starting the same way you are; nude figure models and then the costumes. I wish you all success!
I've been thinkin' how to say this.XD But I feel that clothes add more character to the character. So I really like 4. But if they act like normal cats by rumaging through trash and stuff then I thought clothes were too civilized-looking to be so dependent on stuff like that. Then again I see nothin wrong with clothes in The Secret of NIMH tho.
If they didn't have clothes then I'd say number 2 because the hair can add character to them. It would remind me of The Catillac Cats from the Heathcliffe cartoons. But because she seems younge here I feel the erm.. "womanly features," aren't necessary. But yet I've seen you draw them like that in that Nightshade Girl Sketch and I thought that looked real good so I feel number 4 is also good. So I'm leanin towards 2 or 4.
2 if you kinda like the more natural type look.
4 if you kinda like realistic-type more advanced.
Or...somethin like them anyway. Hard to describe.^^;

You bring up very good references and touch on some really good points! Hmm...this IS the dilemma, though. To go more natural like no.2 or more advanced like no.4? People seem to be divided between 4 and 3 (3 which is rather close to 2)... You also make a good point that I need to have an example of a character who is not so youngish because it looks off here, but I'm glad you saw Nightshade and were able to see what I was meaning to portray *blushes* I think during my lunch break, I'll give it one more shot. Thanks for your help! *glomps*
I say #2 and #3, and reserve very visible boobage or hips for characters meant to be "matronly", like the mom you mentioned. ;3 It definitely reminds me of a more classic animation style, which I dig. as someone else mentioned, #2 is great -- it also keeps the focus on the emotion of the character and makes her seem more lively.
For enhanced bustlines and whatnot, just avoid nipples and you could still go clothing-less and maintain a classic storytelling look.

Thanks a lot for your input! *hugs* There's an option on the image directly after this one that fits part of what you were saying with regard to clothing-less felines that are still in good taste. It's a bit like opt.2, but with a hint of opt.3, as well. And then there's opt.4. But, your suggestions are definitely something that I'll have to give consideration to, especially the part about the matron being more shapely than the rest. Although, in a cat society, the harem is run by a dominant male, but mothers can still hold to this a bit, I think Thank you!
