Boogle Contest: Boogl, The Egyptian Goddess of Insects
Whew. Where to begin? >^.^< I'll try the beginning.
When
announced a new contest for her clown character, boogle, i really wanted to work on a submission. Not just because i love an excuse to give a friend "gift art", but because i really wanted to use this opportunity to PUSH myself. I've wanted to do a finished piece of artwork I'm really proud of, and lately i've noticed my abilities have greatly improved over my 2 years in college. So I really wanted to use this to work to a deadline and get something done, instead of wishing i had the time, or passing up the opportunity.
SO! Since I don't LOVE clowns personally (I've got nothing against them, they just aren't something i seek out), I wanted to combine the picture with a theme that would be a challenge AND be something I'm interested in.
I LOVE ancient Egypt, and thankfully- so does
!
I did TONS of research looking for a goddess of insects or ancient egypt, but i found out that although some insects are covered- they are under very different gods and goddesses. I also found this wonderful site about Holy Insects. Apparently the insect heiroglyphs you see in this picture, as well as many others were use in a decorative fashion in their heiroglyphs and insects- the same as other things egypt were highly respected for the roles they played. This is evidenced in the commonly seen Scarab Beetle and its central role in Egyptian Decorations and Myths.
So I said to myself- if there isn't a Goddess of Insects, why not make Boogle one? >^.^< So instead of going with the eyeball theme that's usual, I ran with the Bug theme. I designed their outfits with great care to look like real egyptian outfits, but with a "clown twist". It was an incredably fun challenge to take two very different things like Ancient Egyptians and Clowns and combine the two so that both are still very recognizable.
I spent.... 20 hours? on this all told. I think, I didn't keep track, but i know from start to finish it took my quite a bit of work to complete to my liking.
Now a few details explained. Abigail (on the right) is playing the role of a high priestess for Boogle, Her belt spells out her name in Egyptian- I use the egyptian alphabet to spell out her name, which translates to: "Abgal" but is pronounced the same way. I tried to use colours i found in the references that would unite her with Boogle, but keep her in character. So the plainer gold pieces and the shorter skirt and plainer headress are to show her role- but the girly colours and the diamonds on the necklace and belt are purely Abigail >^.^<
Boogle herself I tried to use a lot of the colours I saw in the Boogle pictures, and make them unite only roughly, as i see that's what Beth loves to do in her own outfits for Boogle.
Boogle's belt, spells out her name in Eypgtian- Boogle. Technically, i could have spelled her name Bogl- an have is pronounced the exact same way as Boogle, but i wanted to bring is closer to the original with the two o's. The sash on the belt doesn't say ANYthing- its actually using the holy insect heiroglyphs i could find, ones that are purely decorative and aren't used to say anything.
I always intended to stick insects in the picture (like DUH goddess of insects- i think i'd get shot for NOT doing it). First of all- all the insects are also represented on the belt, and i did try to use reference photos online for their general shapes- but i just used it for general references and didn't copy exact poses. Secondly, I decided to not make them all their original colourings, but make them almost a shaddowy summons of the goddess Boogl. I am still in love with the Millipede/Centipede headress <3
Whew! I think that was all i wanted to say!. As i said, I put a lot of work into it, and I can't WAIT for Beth to see this.
Love you hun! I expect to not win, since amazing people do subimission for these, but i gladly do this anyway, becuz you're always very sweet, and honest with me, and you put up with my silly questions and comments. <3 You have no idea how invaluable just being YOU is- there are many times i say exactly what is on my mind.....and wait for someone to make fun of me, and you (and farore) always laugh along and take it in stride. It means quite a bit to me, as not many people in my life are like that (there are way too many people in my life that i feel i must hide things from, and you and farore and happily not one of them! <3)
O.O I hope someone besides Beth read all of that

(PST- THANK YOU SO MUCH FARORE!!! You're redlines helped me alot! I owe a bit of the finished product to you!)
(PS- Yeah i know the representations are not Centipedes and are in fact millipedes- i know these are Beth's favs, so i substituted the looks!)

Firstly, I'll tell you all the information I know from an actual Egyptian involving bugs. Just in case you're curious! There was a lot of importance placed on insects by the Egyptians. They had a positive view of the spider, associating it with the goddesses Tayit and Serqet, both forms of Aset (Isis). The spider was considered industrious, goodhearted and protective. It had a reverse role as companion (but not generally form of) of some of the more proactive gods, becoming the punisher of the wicked alongside them.
The worm, by comparison, was considered wretched and destructive. Though Apep is shown as an immense snake, its name form actually indicates 'worm' which is probably an exercise in containing its evil by making it look like something else. The Egyptians did this frequently.
Flies were considered to be the embodiment of bravery, so much so that the medal given to the extremely brave was three golden flies.
The centipede was considered holy as well. Sepa, a form of Amun, was represented as having an entire coiled or unfurled centipede for a head. Motion, and thus feet, was considered extremely important to the continued life of the universe. The Ankh, symbol for eternal life, is a sandal strap for this reason. For the centipede to have so many feet thus invokes the idea of an overflowing abundance of life. The centipede was considered a keeper of secret knowledge, a protective creature as well as a punishing one-- unleashing terrible retribution on the evil.
Tabubu, often called "the first vampire" by folklorists, dressed in the finest clothes and jewels, attended by bugs of various sorts (particularly droning insects like flies and bees) who become beautiful women and men at her command.
These are just a few examples though :) ON TO THE PICTURE
Holy wow. This is really fantastic and I can tell you put a lot into it! The description almost made me cry. ;.; You're far too sweet! I love all the thought you put into this, and the intricacy and love put into the details of their clothes. You did a perfect combination of Egyptian and clowny, the purple and green aspects of Boogle's outfit (great job on the transparency of the skirt!) and the pink and purple colors to go with Abigail's hair really make it evident who the characters are supposed to be :) I love the headdress, and how much it reminds me of the photo I took of Mr. Nibbly on a skull where he reminded me of a Uraeus :)
I love this, thank you so much for entering and putting so much into it. I hope you had fun with it and it's awesome how much research you did, learning is fun :D *Hugs you to pieces* <3

*gets hugged to pieces and dies incredably happy*
eee! yeay! <3 *big happy grin* I'm so glad you love it <3 Its been killing me not to share this with you and ask your opinion as i went along.
I got Photoshop (a free trial version) halfway thru, so i was SOOO tempted to redo Boogle's colouring to the better quality of abigail- which i did at school while i was waiting thru a useless class XD. You have no idea how it kills me. Was using GIMP before and i didn't realize the quality gap until i got down to colouring this.
I didn't do hours- and years!- of research like you did obviously <3, but i think the main point agrees. The respected and sometimes even worshipped Insects, but they tended to be grouped by their individual traits rather than their status as insects. It was certainly interesting learning about the holy insect heiroglyphs and how they often used them decoratively, without having any meaning behind them. Fun stuff
I'm glass it reminds you of Mr nibbly <3 I "ee"ed out loud after I finished drawing/colouring it. He looks so fun and regal up there.
<3 I did love doing this. I definitely proved to myself that i could DO it, and that my skills are really improving. Overall this was a great experience for me. <3
Now i want something else to work on *giggles*

I read the whole description! xD I actually saw this when you first posted it, but didn't have time to stop and comment right then, so I'm glad you linked me cause it's a good reminder to come comment! XD
The amount of thought and care that's gone into this is mind-blowing @_@ It looks great! I love the hieroglyphs and all the insane attention to detail you've got here *o* You did a fantastic job of mixing the clowniness and the Egyptian look... I think my most favorite part is hunting around to find all the bugs in the picture XD and of course, I just adore Boogle's headdress!

hehe! Thanks I'm glad the bugs have added a fun game element XD
*giggles and huggles* but yes! lots of work, and i too am in love with the headdress- as i was telling Beth- I "eee"ed out loud when i finished colouring it XD. I'm so proud of it!
And I'm also SO glad i combined two very different subjects together so well. >^.~< that means my creativity is still working- woot! I certainly loved thinking of a solution to the challenge, I loved putting different and challenging things together- I used to love doing that in my stories as well.
