Okay, this should be interesting. What *does* it mean?

"The song was a lamentation of old testament stories with sexual overtone. It talks about King David lust and murderous act. It also includes reference to Samson’s hair being cut. The song is more about the fallibility of humans. The cry of hallelujah is not of someone praising the lord (”it’s not a cry from someone who has seen the light”, “it’s a cold and broken hallelujah”). I am not going to go deep into interpreting the lyrics. As most poems can’t be interpreted word for word. There’s no shortage of interpretation even among Cohen’s fan. But one thing for sure, it is not meant to be festive."

Personally, of all the versions I've heard, I still have to go with the one I heard by Rufus Wainwright that was used in the Shrek movie. So moving, and the accompanying visuals were perfect for the piece.

Here's one version, though like all Cohen songs there are additional verses, and live he sometimes shortens it. Pick and choose the ones you like!

Yeah, Cohen has a distinctive voice, but not a good one, I would say.

How about Tom Waits? I'm sure you've heard "Downtown Train." I'd love to hear your version of that, since you can draw from the many covers (Rod Stewart, Everything But the Girl).
