I. . . I'm laughing too hard to possibly even wait to share this, never mind keep it to myself.
Kay, so. . . Since Zootopia is still the only channel my brain has been getting, I decided to (try to) write a spec script.
The plot described as briefly as I can manage:
The villains from the movie try to get pardoned by divulging the existence of the P.E.T.S. (Predatory Early Test Subjects), twenty-odd predators that were abducted years before the events of the movie so they could test and develop the Savage Serum into the instant-rage-upon-skin-contact concoction of nightmares as seen in the movie, which the interim mayor (a former Bellwether appointee whose poll numbers were in the toilet to begin with) reluctantly agrees to in exchange for their whereabouts.
Simultaneously, Night Howler becomes the weapon of choice among Zootopia's crime elements, first used against each other in copycat and/or revenge attacks, then against the ZPD after they realize that, though they are a far cry away from redeveloping the Savage Serum, it's still a scary enough prospect for it to completely derail whatever would have otherwise occupied the ZPD's time.
Faced with severe backlash from the deal with the conspirators (both having made it, and the flimsy attempts that were made to not honor it) and a police shortage, the mayor basically throws a Hail Mary and attempts to solve both problems at once: By encouraging the rehabilitated P.E.T.S., who are known to have greater resistance to the effects after extended exposure, to enlist in the Zootopia Police Academy. To everyone's surprise, not only do the majority of them do so, eight are approved for early graduation (which seems to address their Night Howler problem, but also creates another one in that the department now has eight officers who suffered for years because Bogo and co. dropped the ball big time on them).
I've actually written basic profiles for over twenty P.E.T.S., but only two of them are, at this point, intended to have any real baring on the plot. One of them, Zero, I recently got my first reference of (which you can see here if you haven't already). The other is a skunk named Hazel with whom Nick has a prior history (Hazel: "He means we made a rug together!" Tera: "Er, yes, I think they would've figured that on their own Hazel."). The rest, for now, are just to flesh out the P.E.T.S. -- to give a greater idea of just what kind of mammals were being targeted, how the P.E.T.S. all came to possess certain skills ("Damn, how'd you become so dangerous with that stun baton?" "Remember that hyena we came in with? She's a Zoolympic fencer; brought home the Gold from Vancougar even. Needless to say, we were all interested in learning how to best knock the crap out of our captors if we could ever get our cages open."), etc.
And since Zero's real name etc. have been sealed and classified (to protect his parents, who were also P.E.T.S., and who are both still in rehab), I decided to fill out Hazel's employment application instead.
My hand to God: The very first scene I brainstormed and penned is when the early graduates file into the bullpen and Bogo sorts them into the various voids left by officers still under observation in hospital. During this scene, Hazel pssts at Nick to get his attention, tells him how happy she was, not just to learn that he was still alive, but that it was he to whom she owed her freedom, and also expresses her gratitude to Judy before Bogo shouts to get her attention.
Bogo: "Dodge? Ms. Dodge. Hazel Dodge!"
Hazel: (looking up) "Yes, sir?"
Bogo: (points) "You've been assigned. Francine will debrief you."
Hazel turns her head back at Francine. Pause before she turns back to Bogo.
Hazel: (shaking her head) "Oh that's just mean."
*deep breath*
Look back up where it says "ZPD MENTOR:". . . . .
That's not an edit. And I did nothing to influence that outcome neither. Either "the koalas" have the exact same sense of humor that I do, or the gods of random dice rolls were smiling on me this day.
I. . . Dammit, I'm still grinning. Curses, now I need to commission an Officer Dodge reference too. ^_^
