Dudley's World War II ancestor
In 1916 during World War I, when Herman was 5, he met Wilma Katswell when she was about to leave to fly in the war. Going through the crowd of people, he went up to her and told her that she was his hero and that he wanted to be a pilot like her when he grows up. Wilma was touched that she was his hero and gave him a lucky pin she always had on her of metallic wings and told him to always keep on reaching for his dreams. When Herman was 18 he enrolled in the Army Air Corps to become a pilot but discrimination from a lot of his peers and superiors kept him from flying. Herman took his time and dealed with anything they threw at him knowing that if he stayed long enough something would change for the better and in 1940 during World War II, Herman finally became a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen and flew to defend his country. With his dream realized he decided to honor the person who inspired him to keep trying to fly, he named his plane, Wilma and put the pin she gave right on his jacket.
