Bully of Bunny Burrow (Commission)
Gideon screwed his face up into a scowl. "You wanna be friends? With me?"
"Well, I--, yeah. I'm a fox like you. My mom said there were other foxes in Bunnyburrow. So, it's nice to meet you." Desmond forced a tiny smile. He hugged his bushy, ringed tail around his side like a comfort blanket.
The look on Gideon Grey's face turned to a cruel, toothy grin, and he pointed severely at Desmond's tail. "You ain't nothin' but the sorriest excuse for a fox I ever seen!" The tubby fox lurched closer, and when Desmond's smile vanished, Gideon's grew wider. "Yer a half-breed, and you know what that gets you around here?"
Desmond backpedaled, cowering. "I don't--, I don't know, what?"
"You git the country welcome!" the big fox guffawed, snatching Desmond by the shoulders. He dragged the squealing half-breed past rows of carrots and through the corn. Bunnies once bouncing and playing scattered in fear of Gideon. Some of them went for help. Others simply hid.
"I didn't do anything! I just wanted to be friends!" Desmond yowled, struggling and thrashing in Gideon's grubby, but tough paws. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he cowered in his city-boy blue jeans.
Gideon hurled Desmond into the field with a vicious, youthful snarl. The half-breed fox landed butt-first in mud made from irrigation. He whimpered and cried, trying to pick himself up first and scamper away from Gideon Grey second, but the bully descended on him, and that evil grin was bigger than ever on his fat face.
"You oughta run home to yer momma!" Gideon barked, yanking Desmond's hair until he squealed before shoving him back into the muddy earth. "Go home! Go home and tell 'er, oh, mommy, mommy! That Gideon Grey beat me up 'cause Imma half-breed!"
"I'm not a half-breed, I'm a fox," Desmond quivered, his voice faint and lacking conviction. He tried again to get out of the mud, but Gideon grabbed a paw full of his silky hair again. "Don't hurt me, I'm sorry!"
The bully let loose a strangely joyful belly laugh as he unsheathed his terrible claws mere inches from the foxcoon's eyes. "Lookit them little claws you got. Worst'a both critters, that's what you are," he growled. "And you and me ain't never gonna be friends!" he warned, rearing up for the proverbial kill.
Desmond thrust out his paws and shrieked like death. It was the shrill cry of a distressed raccoon, no sound a fox could have made.
The pitch of the cry made Gideon wince. His ears splayed down and he clenched his teeth. "Egh! Shut up!" he barked, and he slashed the foxcoon's face. Desmond's screech grew an octave in pain then sharply fell off and he covered his snout, left quivering and sobbing. Gideon unhanded his now grubby and knotted hair and pushed him back with a foot on his shoulder.
Gideon looked consideringly at his claws, then down at the sniveling green-eyed thing he had momentarily made his plaything. "I think you might need another lesson 'r two," he tutted, squatting near Desmond.
A little too late, a bright-faced and indigo-eyed bunny popped through the corn and scowled. "Gideon Grey!" she snapped. "Leave him alone!"
Very slowly, almost casually, Gideon rolled his dull eyes over to the bunny. He smirked. "Judy Hopps. Didn't get enough the last time, didja, ya' stupid bunny?"
Another bunny came through the corn more calmly, and this time, Gideon knew his fun was over. It was Bonnie Hopps, Judy's mother, and though she took a very long look at Desmond cowering and crying in the mud, she eventually stepped forward. That alone was enough to make Gideon scoff and trot away, but he called back, "We ain't done, half-breed! Not even close!"
Judy glared after Gideon, but a sniffle from Desmond earned her full attention. "Are you gonna be okay?" she asked, standing on the very edge of the mud. She touched Desmond's paws and coaxed him to show his face. When she saw the bloody gashes on his muzzle, she sympathetically winced, then looked at her mother. "He needs help."
Rather delicately, Bonnie said, "Well, if he doesn't get along with Gideon Grey, then he can't be all that bad. Come on, sweetie. Let's get you cleaned up, and we'll see about getting you home to your parents."
Desmond wiped his cheeks, trying to clean himself but really only smearing the mud in deeper. He pulled himself out of the muck with a whine. "Um, but, mom told me bunnies don't like foxes."
The mother bunny looked away, momentarily embarrassed, then back at the little foxcoon - though little was relative, since he was nearly as tall as she was. She smiled patiently. "Let's not worry about that right now. C'mon, Officer Hopps," she lovingly, patronizingly said to Judy. "We need to get this little boy some help."
"We do!" Judy smartly said. She took Desmond's muddy paw. "Come on, home's not far from here. You'll be okay! I don't think we have any clothes that'll fit you, though..."
Though they weren't the species he was expecting, Desmond did, in fact, make a few friends in his first day outside of Zootopia.
