"All right, Logan, let's make this quick. You already know my name so let's talk about the details. This is the Den, the center of lycanthropic political power. I grew up here. So did my parents. While you were inducted into this life, I was born to it. My parents mated as wolves and I was born under the light of the full moon. Those of us that have never been only human call ourselves Alphas. We were never bitten and we never knew life without the touch of the moon on our skin. We lead the Pack and make most of the decisions regarding werewolf affairs.
If you're an Alpha you don't really get any special powers or anything, it's just a way that makes us different from the rest of the werewolves. I know what you're thinking, why would we get to make the decisions simply because we were born this way? Well, we've literally got a lifetime of experience being werewolves whereas most of the folks that we select are brought in later. That's not to say that some members of the Senate aren't Omegas, that's you, by the way, but you have to earn the position just like anything else. God, I sound like my father.
He's all about upholding the werewolf traditions and so on, but I never really got into that. He says maybe one day I'll see what he's talking about but he's always flashing me these looks of his that says he's watching me. I know he doesn't approve of how I dress or behave or pretty much anything, but I'm the best damn retrieval specialist he's got and he knows it. I know how to handle the weres and the humans and I always get the job done. I suspect if I wasn't so good at my job he'd have me chained to the wall until I learned to be a good girl, but bad girls have more fun anyway.
He sent me after you because you did the one thing they tell us not to do. Draw attention. Thanks to your little stunt the humans are potentially aware of what we are and what we do. Now so far it's limited to whatever that little group was you ran afoul of back there. He's hoping we can keep it that way but let's face it, girl, you're on probation. He's sending agents to figure out who they are and what they're all about but until we know, I'm supposed to keep an eye on you.
I don't really care so much as long as you're not a pain in the tail but he did seem pretty damn serious about it. Like when I got this scar on my arm, and no, you can't hear the story. All you need to know is he was right for once and I screwed up. Anyway, let's move on. I think you and I are going to get along great, like salt and pepper. Stick with me, and I'll show you how a werewolf has a good time.
For the time being you and I are partners. I don't know what you know and what Kameron didn't tell you, but being a werewolf comes with some perks, not the least of which is our aging slows down by half. Bet you couldn't guess my age. By the way, don't. It's just never as fun when you know the answer. Anyway, most of this stuff would have been spelled out in the pamphlet, but you didn't get inducted in the usual way so the pamphlet probably wouldn't help you."
Logan flattened her ears. "There's a pamphlet? Why didn't I get a pamphlet???"
"There's a website too. You even get a keyring."
"Damn it."

She's certainly confident, I'll say that much for her. I might even go so far as to say she's downright cocky, and she certainly seems to be the sort of person who might be a bit of a loose cannon if not for how much it would probably piss her father off. Well, okay, more of a loose cannon than she no doubt already is. But I suppose that if anyone was going to show you the ropes of what being a werewolf is all about, you might as well learn from someone who has known what's what since birth, and it sounds like she could be one heck of an ally if she and Logan are able to get along and not squabble too much. She's pretty cute, too, which is a nice plus.
I like the little bit of introduction to werewolf society this gives us, too. I'll have to say that, thus far, they strike me as a tad elitist, even the ones who might be on what you'd call the good side. Then again, maybe they have to be, at least a little, in order to protect themselves. I'll be interesting to see how Logan fits into all of this, especially considering she wasn't chosen in the normal way, and if these vaunted Alphas are really so good at keeping order after all.

Vanessa is definitely intended to be a contrast to Logan, at least initially. The black and white isn't just a metaphor, haha. :) Whereas Logan is reserved and mostly concerned for Abby, Alex, and Kameron, Vanessa is more wild and self involved. This isn't to say she's shallow but she's certainly got the mentality that she knows best for most things. She's going to get Logan into some trouble, you can be sure of that. Vanessa is the type that thinks a good fight is when at least three chairs get broken. However, she does know what she's talking about most of the time, which is both a plus and a minus, depending on where you're standing when the party starts. Whether the two ladies can get along is a whole different question. ;)
Likely this exchange of dialogue will be used in the actual story at some point, I've long been amused by the pamphlet remark because it just seems so absurd. 'So You've Decided To Become A Werewolf', or some such thing. LOL. As Cassidy indicated normal werewolves are chosen and inducted, as he himself was, so they do actually have a whole mechanism set up for adding new members, as do all of the were societies. As the story progresses, you'll get to see the various were societies and how they all interact. By and large, at least at this point, all the species control their own affairs though they do coordinate efforts. The were horses provide the money, the werewolves provide the enforcement... Etc. ;) Logan is definitely a bit of a curiosity, given that it's been a while since anyone didn't choose to become a werewolf. :)

HA! Pamphlet, website, and keyring, now all that's left are the support groups and recreation centers. Sign me up, or at lest that's what I'd like to say, but I enjoy making too much noise sometimes, but that would also mean that I couldn't be left to my own devices... Crap. Darn rocks and hard places, and being stuck between them.
If you've read the first chapter/episode, you'll note at the end Logan jokes about that very thing.
As for making noise, in the were world that usually results in them sending a retrieval specialist or someone like Kameron after you, depending on the severity of the offense, and usually it's for your own good. :)

Yeah I remember it, the amusement was real.
I understand that completely, it'd just be a compulsive thing from me. I'd never anything too noisy, but just enough for them to have someone keep an eye on me. However, if I was kept busy, never got bored, and never got too excited, it probably wouldn't happen too often.

You think so?
Without revealing too much Vanessa is intended to be a stark contrast to Logan especially when they first meet and learn about each other. Their character arc together is going to be a major driving force in the story. While early on Logan lets Vanessa sort of free herself they'll both realize that sometimes unrestricted power is dangerous. Sometimes there's a reason rules exist. ;)

I decided she should be a literal and metaphorical contrast to Logan, at least when she starts, plus when I decided she'd be a white wolf a jokey line I'll put in much later came into my head.
A couple of times I almost named her Valerie but I liked Vanessa Sharp better, rolled off the tongue. She's a wild one for sure, though I do like the character evolution arc I've got planned for her.
