Maskerlings are the magical embodiment of the spirit of craft. They are created by the god of maskerlings and her underlings. One mask could take centuries to carve, as the magic used to carve it is wild and unwieldy. As the details are carved, the spirit is instilled. A mask is what carries the maskerling's soul, and each is unique to the creature.
The rarity of this species is based on the detail in the mask. Pawn maskerlings are simple shapes. The god's apprenticies practice their craft with simple geometric designs. Once they become more advanced, they start to carve more intricate designs.
After the mask is created, it is placed to clay and the body of a maskerling forms. The spirit of these creatures is bound to the mask; if the mask is destroyed, the magic that binds the spirit is released.
Legend holds that one apprentice surpassed the skill of even the maskerling god, and began to imitate creatures and human convention in his masks. Maskerlings displaying these masks are extremely rare.
