R2-D196 was formerly assigned to Vur Frei when he was a pilot within Raptor Squadron as Raptor 7 until a disaster of a scouting mission in which their X-Wing was ambushed. Vul Frei was forced to eject and received sever injuries in the process. Everyone thought that the plucky astromech was destroyed along with the x-wing, but several hours passed and Nik Vecto (Raptor 2) found them both adrift in space. Vur Frei's injuries prevented him from returning to pilot duties while R2-D196 was only missing it's right leg (which was replace). After being repaired, R2-D196 now called Lucky was assigned to Vur Frei's replacement in the squadron, Menivra Knim.
