On this Fourth of July (2016) weekend, I experienced a moment so terrific, I couldn't wait until "Throwback Thursday" to share this with you... so, here it is now!
Last year, around this time, I got to meet a number of cartoon voice actors (for the first time) at the "Florida Supercon" in Miami Beach, including Tom ("Spongebob Squarepants") Kenny and Charlie ("Cow and Chicken"/"Tiny Toon Adventures") Adler. Well, at this year's edition, I had the rare opportunity of meeting one of my personal favorite voice actors (still in business for over thirty years): Jim Cummings.
His list of credits is quite long. They include the 'Tasmanian Devil' on the TV series "Taz-mania" and he was the 'Cat' half of "CatDog" (with Tom Kenny as the 'Dog' half). He also lent his vocal talents to animated feature films, such as "Balto" (in which he'd played the villainous role of 'Steele')...
But Cummings' legacy will come from the variety of voices he provided for the Walt Disney Animation Studio (in both theatrical and TV productions). Among the characters he's best known for on the tube were 'Winnie the Pooh' (imitating Sterling Holloway), 'Tigger' (mimicking Paul Winchell's vocal talents), 'Bonkers D. Bobcat' (first on "Raw Toonage", and then on his own series "Bonkers"), 'Don Karnage' and 'Louis' (on "TaleSpin"), 'Pete' (on "Goof Troop", "House of Mouse", and "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse"), and 'Big Bad Wolf' (on the Disney Junior/Disney Channel series "Goldie and Bear").
And, in Disney animated features, he was the voice of 'Ed' the hyena in "The Lion King" and 'Ray' the firefly in "The Princess and the Frog".
The one voice a lot of folks will remember Jim Cummings for (for now) is that of 'Darkwing Duck' - now that a comic book reboot of the animated character (from Joe Books) is presently on sale at comic shops everywhere. So, when I'd asked him to share a 'photo-op' with me, he'd suggested we strike a pose in the style of the feathered hero, while my amigo
Funimal used his digital cell phone camera to capture this moment in time.
I'd asked Jim if he knew about the comic book reboot, and he said, "Oh, just recently."
"They'll probably update and change his famous introductory announcement," I said.
"Not without my consent!" Mr. Cummings retorted.
Doing a rather poor imitation of 'Darkwing Duck', I said, "I am the terror that flaps in the night... I am the emoji that's here to spoil your spam!"
And with that, Jim cracked up! (Hey, always leave 'em laughing!)
I'll have one more picture of another individual I got to meet for the first time at the "Florida Supercon", later this week...
