These rare blue iguanas really show how captive breeding efforts can help save a species. After being devastated by human colonization/encroachment on their island homes to the point where only 15 lizards still lived in the wild, an aggressive captive breeding campaign propagated and released enough lizards to bring the population over 200.

Did you hear about the mass killing that happened last May at a conservation center for these guys? A bunch of teenagers broke in and killed a bunch of the breeders for the conservation. It was so devastating I was crying.

Not to dull the mood. But this piece really feels like a memorial for those poor iguanas to me.

I did, it makes me insanely sad. I will never understand that sort of mindless destruction - it just makes me even more firm in my resolve to try to help reptiles get much better PR. I bring my snakes to visit local youths (girl scouts, etc.) and nothing makes me happier to see someone go from scared to tenative to curious in the span of just a few minutes. Like with all conservation, if people don't care, these amazing critters don't stand a chance. : /
Yea, I run an educational program at elementary and middle schools with my animals, and it really does help a lot. People have to realize that though reptiles are DIFFERENT, that doesn't make them aliens... or horrible, mean creatures. My reptiles get space in my bed with me before my dogs or cats do :P
