Pincoushion cactus flowers
I was pleasently surprized today when I saw one of my two desert pincoushion cacti bloomed these flowers. The other failed, more than likely due to the Sand Hill Crane repeatedly kept kicking the plant out of its pot . The cranes either left the area, or the one asshole neighbor succeeeded killing the cranes for damaging his truck.
But at least the one untouchd plant did great and bloomed.

Well, it really is a Pincushion Cactus; the crown of big, satiny, pinkish-purple flowers is a dead giveaway. I think this is a Mammillaria boolii. They're in the same family as one of the varieties of Fish Hook Cacti, so it falls into both categories.
