I've had this idea on my sketchpad for quite some time and just now brought this vision to life. The challenge was to paint this character using no lines and only light/shadow.
Most of the production process involves using the pen tool in Photoshop for shading and various adjustment layers for color balancing. The final layer on this piece is a solid orange Hue layer at 25% opacity to balance all of the colors along with the same red/orange spectrum.
Prod time: 8 hours in Photoshop CS3.

Thanks! The style is a departure from my usual approach, but I like it a lot! Photoshop really has some amazing capabilities with the adjustment layers you can throw on.
One of the special techniques I used on this one was a warm to cool (orange to blue gradient). That gave the bottom of the character an orange cast from the ground and the top of the character a slight blue cast from the sky.
The pen tool ended up being absolutely invaluable in the completion of this piece.
