It should reflect what you're aiming for. If you want to be a wizard, you will need high intelligence. If your character is dumb and tries to be a wizard, he will make a bad wizard :P
Same goes with most martial classes (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin), they will usually want higher physical stats (Strength, Dexterity and Constitution)

I've been a couple classes: Paladin, Fighter, and Ranger. My dice rolls really sucked in combat with the former, while the latter had a little bit more success even with some bad rolls.
Aside from my forced Character Alignment, my Naga was actually pretty good as an archer, though he took hits like a wet paper napkin. Does make me think I work better as Support, rather than being in the fray.

Sustaining damage is a very critical anchor to a game, this is what makes healers necessary, or rather how much they are.
Meanwhile classes that have sustaining healing versus those that don't can easily be balanced out poorly if done incorrectly.
Hence the medic train. Or perhaps the more unlikely who needs healer I have myself.
Clerics are often the at the center of such a maelstrom with their sea of generality.
