I've been meaning to look into xgen. Is it true that you can make fur color based of the texture/diffuse you load onto the mesh?

yes, you can to exactly that, the setup is a little complicated but there is a lot of tutorial on youtube , you can also set tip and base color, if you know a little xgen script then the possibilities are endless
