
SAM 2600, the famed "Air Force One" VC-137. President Kennedy was the first to fly aboard SAM 2600 in 1962, which also carried his body home for funeral after his assassination on November 22, 1963. The VC-137 continued to support presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton before being finally retired in March 1998.
During her lifetime, SAM 2600 set a number of firsts; the fastest Washington-Moscow time, taking Nixon to China in 1972, and flying back the bodies of John F. Kennedy, and later Lyndon Johnson in 1973. She was replaced as primary Air Force One by her sister ship SAM 2700, but served as backup for many years. The last president to fly aboard SAM 2600 was Bill Clinton, who used -2600 when SAM 2700 got stuck in mud. She was retired to the NMUSAF in March 1998 and placed on display ever since.
