King Allfire was nervous. And worried. He was walking all around the corridor, waiting for the door of his royal bedroom to open. His wife, the Queen Morlava, was currently in labor. It'd been 4 hours now.
He wasn't calm at all. He feared the worst. Morlava was very weak and often sick, having hatched prematurely herself, and he and her father, the former king/regent Sir Leodragon the Strict, were sure bearing an egg inside her would be too much for her body. But she insisted so much Allfire accepted. For 6 months (dragonesses bear their egg inside of them 6 months before laying them, then it hatches 3 months later), she rarely got up from her bed, she was sleeping almost 12 hours a day ; her husband and her father, who hated each other, always stayed by her side, at least one of them. She was weaker and more tired than she had ever been.
She still managed to adore what was growing inside of her tummy, while her husband only began to adore the idea of being a father after 3 months, too worried of his wife's health before ; as for her father, he still strongly disapproved the idea and kept telling her the whole time that if they wanted a child, they could have adopted instead.
She thought of a name. Flame. It would go for both a boy or a girl, it was simple, cute, and classical among dragons, it would never get old-fashionned. Allfire thought that precisely, it was too simple, too classical, and that it was lazy to choose a neutral name.
The door opened. Allfire jumped, both relieved of the waiting's end and panicked of the suspense, as if he was expecting a declaration of peace or war to Camelhot. He rushed to the doctor.
Before he asked "So ?", he noticed something in the arms of the old dragon. A black, purple-dotted, perfectly shaped egg.
"Congratulations, sire." the dragon doctor said in a neutral voice.
Allfire's hands shook. That was it. He was a father. He slowly started to smile, his eyes suddenly became shiny of joy. And of tears of joy too. He carefully took the egg in his arms, gazing at it. It was probably the same size of any good dragon egg, but it looked so tiny... The King immediatly thought of it as the tiniest, most precious and most fragile treasure in the whole world and he had to protect it at all cost.
"It is... It is beautiful..." he muttered.
He happily looked up at the doctor.
"How is my queen ? She needs to see our egg ! It'll be our first moment as a family !"
The doctor looked down.
"Sire... I... I don't know how to say it to you..."
King Allfire's huge smile faded.
"...What ?"
"The queen...", the old dragon doctor hesitated, "...is no more..."
The world crashed under Allfire's feet.
"No..." he muttered.
He shook his head in denial.
"No !..." he repeated.
Tears wetted his eyeballs and ran on his cheeks. He fell on his knees, tightening the egg.
"NO !..." he repeated, his voice shaken by his sobbing.
Camelhot was in mourning. Queen Morlava's funerals just ended. As if the sky was depressed as well, it was raining, wetting her grave for the first time.
King Allfire was sitting on his throne, dressed in black, looking stern and empty. His egg was in his arms. There was no way he'd let it go too as she did. She was gone.
And his father-in-law, Sir Leodragon, was turning in circles in front of him, looking furious by his attitude, tone, body language and expression, but extremely sad according to his tears running all over his cheeks.
"IT IS YOUR FAULT ALLFIRE !!!", Sir Leodragon shouted.
King Allfire looked away, a tear running.
"WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GET HER PREGNANT ??! WHY !??"
"She begged me to..." King Allfire said with a stern tone.
"YOU PERFECTLY KNOW HOW WOMEN ARE !!!", the knight cut, "THEY ARE ROMANTIC AND THINK LIFE IS PINK WITH TONS OF CHILDREN !!! BUT YOU KNEW AS MUCH THAN ME IT WOULD KILL HER !!! SHE COULDN'T BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE CHALLENGE THAT IS BEARING LIFE !!! WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST ADOPT ?!?"
"She didn't want..."
"STOP SAYING ME THAT !!! AS HER HUSBAND IT WAS YOUR DUTY TO KNOW WHAT WAS GOOD FOR HER !!! I MAY BE A SIMPLE KNIGHT AND YOU MAY BE MY KING, BUT YOU ARE NOTHING BUT THE SPOUSE AND I WAS THE FATHER. AND LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU !!!"
King Allfire slowly turnt his head to the knight.
"BUT YOU, OOOOOH YOU... YOU DIDN'T CARE !!! NO, YOU AGREED BECAUSE TO YOU IT WAS THE OCCASION TO EJACULATE IN MY DAUGHTER !!! YOU DISGUST ME !!!"
King Allfire got up in anger.
"I LOVED HER !!!" he shouted back.
"NOT AS MUCH THAN A FATHER DOES !!!" Sir Leodragon's voice broke in crying.
He didn't look enraged anymore, but severely crushed, new tears shedding. He hid his eyes in his hands and turnt away, not wanting to show his weak side to his loathed son-in-law.
"No parent should outlive their child...", he articulated between 2 sobbing, "She was my everything... She was the last member of my family... She was my baby... And now... Now..."
Leodragon turnt to the king with a half-sad half-hating look.
"Now she is dead. Because of... this thing..." he snarled, pointing at the egg with mixed-up disgust and hate.
King Allfire's eyes widened in shock. He DARED. He dared putting the cause of her death on his egg !
"Sir Leodragon !", he scolded, "It's your grandchild !"
"Everything was alright when I had no grandchild ! She was alive !"
Allfire tightened his fist, preventing himself from punching the old dragon. But he knew violence, although very attractive, would make the things worse. Leodragon was speaking because of sorrow, he lost his daughter.
It was now of Allfire duty as a king to end a conflict. Especially in memory of his dear Morlava. And for their child.
"Sir Leodragon..." he said calmy in a serious voice.
The latter crossed his arms and looked away, trying to hide from him new tears.
"You know...", King Allfire pursued, "I strongly disapproved the idea too at first. As she begged for me to make a baby, I begged her to forget the idea and tried to convince her she had almost 0 chance to survive labor."
Leodragon made a grunt.
"She didn't want to be a mother because of fairytales and other nonsense. She wanted one to raise it with me, but was ready to face the consequences."
Leodragon rised an eyebrow, not leaving his scowl however.
"I told her there were strong chances she'd die, but she told me 2 things. First, there was still a chance, and she wanted to try it at all cost before menopause striked. She told me she dreamt to have a family... with me... And to raise her child and to see him or her growing up, to tell him or her stories, taking care of her or him... And she wanted to see me doing the same... And you, Leodragon. She wanted to see you being a grandfather "as nice than he is as a father", she said."
Leodragon's mouth formed a "o", his scowl stopped.
"As for the second thing... She told me that she was aware there were bigger chances the 1st option would never happen. But she wasn't scared. She told me that she would be sad to never hug of kiss her baby, but she told me she wanted to have one anyway. And you know why, Leodragon ?..."
Sir Leodragon hesitated, unsure. He ended to turn to King Allfire.
"Why ?..." he asked.
"Once again, for 2 reasons, but that time, these 2 reasons would apply at the same time.", he said, looking at his egg, "First, she told me she wanted my egg. She wanted to feel it through her body, she wanted to bear it in her thinking of me, and she wanted to know it was mine. She wanted a child of mine. She told me if she had to feel a last thing before death, she would be happy if it was "our" egg."
His voice cracked again, tears watering the tiny egg in question.
"Second... She told me... It would be... A present."
"A present ?"
"Her last present.", Allfire sadly nodded, "She begged me, the early times, that if death happened, I shouldn't blame the egg. I should see it as a present from her. And she thought the same for you, Leodragon."
Leodragon sadly frowned with emotion, slowly jawdropping.
"She told me for you to see it as a present from her through death. She wanted me to raise it as my child, and you as your grandchild. That way, she would rest in peace and watch over us. And by us, she means both of us, plus the child."
Silent tears rolled on Leodragon's cheeks while he had a shocked face. His mouth was open, but no sound came out of it. Allfire sniffed, wiping a tear.
"And so I accepted." King Allfire said.
Leodragon looked away again, not to avoid Allfire this time nor to hide his face, but upset.
"She thought of a name.", King Allfire kept talking, "Flame. I didn't want, but... I will keep it as a tribute to her, and to show she indirectly contributed to the child's education."
Leodragon was silent. Allfire hesitated, still not liking him, but knowing that he was legitimely depressed for the same reasons than him and that he needed comfort, he approached, lending him the black egg covered in purple dots.
"Here is your grandchild.", he sadly smiled, "Don't see it as a part of me, please, but as a part of Morlava. She contributed to its creation. Hold it, you will feel better. I immediatly loved it."
Leodragon looked at the egg with deep sadness. He hesitated to touch it, but violently turnt away, letting new tears running.
"I need time..." he sobbed.
Allfire backed away, surprised.
"Please... I really need time..." he repeated.
Allfire sighed. It was true it would take long as he immediatly blamed the egg when he met it. But if Leodragon loved his daughter, he would surely love Flame. He was an awful father-in-law and an annoying dragon in general, but Allfire had to admit, he was a wonderful father and he wasn't a mean being. He needed time.
"As you wish, Sir Leodragon.", said Allfire, leaving the throne room. "You have 3 months before the egg hatches. You widely have time, worry not."
Leodragon remained alone. After a few seconds at staring at emptiness, he fell on his knees and shoved his face in his hands, crying.
King Allfire was nervous. And worried. He was walking all around the corridor, waiting for the door of his royal bedroom to open. His egg was hatching. It'd been 3 hours now.
Suddenly, he heard it. A baby cry. He immediatly straightened, like if the cry was calling him. He rushed to the door that was being opened by the dragon doctor, who looked happy.
Before he asked "So ?", he noticed a tiny yellow dragon hatchling with a tuft of purple hair, crying, wrapped in a pink towel.
"Congratulations, sire, it's a beautiful little girl in perfect health !" the dragon doctor said in a cheerful voice.
Allfire's lower lip and hands shook as a tear of joy ran on his cheek and a smile grew bigger and bigger. A little daughter. That was it. He was a father, but for real this time. He could finally meet her. He carefully took her in his arms.
"Shhhhhh, now...", he muttered with a lot of emotions in his voice, "Daddy is here... He will always be here for you... Flame..."
She immediatly calmed down and tightened his finger, which made him tenderly giggle.
The doctor lended the king a baby bottle, and he fed her, smiling tenderly.
"She is beautiful... Her mother would have loved her..."
"So, shall "Flame" be the princess' name ?" the doctor asked.
"Yes. Here she is. Princess Flame." he answered.
He looked down at her again. She stopped to drink and made a hiccup.
"Aaaaw, dear, are you done already ? You were really hungry, you ! My strong girl !"
He gently tapped her back until she burped. She quickly fell asleep in his arms. She was as small, cute and lively that a campfire's puff. Puff...
Tightening her, he rushed to the Square Table, around which the knights, especially Sir Leodragon, were nervously waiting, with Sir Lamodrak's squire, the young Loungealot, who was giving him wine. Leodragon was the first to notice the king and got up in a flash.
"Ah ! Allfire ! So ?!" he asked.
"Ssshhh !" made Allfire.
He showed the baby to his knights.
"Let me introduce to you the Princess Flame." he whispered.
All the knights aaaw'd, going all crazy at the sight of the hatchling.
"Sir Leodragon,", Allfire cheerfully asked, "would you hold your granddaughter ?"
"Yes ! Yes I do ! Please !" the usually strict and stern knight eagerly said.
He took her in his arms all gently and looked at her. She was so tiny.
"She is beautiful !" Sir Burncival commented.
"Are you kidding, sir ? She's adorable !" Sir Grilliant replied.
"Hello, there !" Sir Lamodrak waved at her.
"Congratulations, yer majesty !" said Sir Burnevere turning to his king.
Loungealot was looking at her too, behind all of them. He tried to look indifferent, but the sight of a hatchling made him smile and wipe a tear of emotion... that he quickly hid, before leaving the room.
Sir Leodragon's eyes got wet and he smiled tenderly at the sleeping dragon baby, before kissing her forehead. King Allfire ordered the other knights in a wave of the hand to leave them alone. They all left, not without goofily waving at the baby before and, in the case of the young Sir Burnevere, ignoring the door and painfully bumping on it. Once alone, Allfire approached his father-in-law with a both smug and tender smile.
"So ? Do you hate her ?" he asked.
"No... I adore her !", the knight answered, "It's like Morlava's birth again !... In fact, she looks exactly like her at her age. She just has extra horns. She probably took that from you."
Telling this, he caressed one of the tiny horns on her head.
"Allfire ? It hurts me to say that, but... You were right. And thank you. I don't know how I would have been to her if you didn't open my eyes 3 months ago. Oh, the happiness I would have missed... I can't believe I hated her as an egg..."
"It's okay,", Allfire patted his shoulder, "you were devastated, and so was I. I think Morlava is happy now, wherever she is."
"Yes,", Leodragon said, "I think this is what she wanted us to be like."
Leodragon rocked Flame gently, next to a proud Allfire.
3 hours later...
"OK, that's it !", Allfire angrily said, "Give her back !"
"No way !", Sir Leodragon hissed menacingly, "I'm her grandfather !"
"And I'm her FATHER ! You've held her enough ! My turn !"
"BACK OFF ALLFIRE !!"
I gave myself a feel when writing this. Shit.
It's been 2 months, maybe 3, that I planned to write the story about King Allfire being a newly father but having to face his wife's death and his father-in-law's rage mixed up with sorrow. I initially thought of a comic instead, but... I had too many ideas to be drawn, I wouldn't had time, it'd have been too long and I have way too many drawings to draw for homework this summer (no real holidays... WHY)
Enjoy ! I'm proud (AND FULL OF FEELS) about this one !
