“Well I’m lost.”
Kejital muttered to nobody in particular. He was actually very lost. He must have taken a wrong turn trying to get to a market and promptly wandered out into the desert. In fact he found himself back at that ruined temple he visited with a tour earlier, with no recollection of how exactly which way he’d come.
Now scratching his head, he tried to remember how he ended up in that dried oasis, and how the tour had left it earlier. After wandering through the strangely unsecured archaeological site, he came at last to an area he remembered, the avenue of the crocodile statues. This is what led to the exit, he recalled at last. All he really had to do was follow that out to the dry lakebed, then head northwest he’d be set.
Luckily he was good at getting himself out of messes! Well, that was mostly true. As the sun slinked down, he tried to push it out of his mind, and run out the temple. As he quickened his pace, he heard something move. Something heavy, as he sped up, he swore one of those statues looked at him.
Then he felt something he was hoping he wouldn’t. Something here was reacting to him, something ancient. And he was reacting to it. He stopped as the feeling intensified, and then suddenly, it began. The empty eyes of statues nearest him blazed with light, and soon the eyes of every statue in the avenue followed. That glowing light suffused him, and he could no longer run away.
He knew what came next.
“Here we go,” Kejital sighed in resignation, he saw his nose begin to pull away, his jaws morphing to a snout filling with razor sharp teeth. His back arched, and the power swelled over him. Skin crackled and hardened, nails sharpened into claws. Muscle bloomed and destroyed his clothing. A powerful tail extended from his spine. The sun’s light faded, and Kejital’s changes accelerated to completion.
The light faded from the eyes of the statues, and the aura dropped from around him, freeing his body. Kejtial waded away from the power, and felt water from the oasis… as if it was never dried at all. Ahead he saw the temple precinct enclosing the oasis, he really hoped he didn’t go back in time. That was always more trouble than it was worth.
Moving forward, he fell forward and drifted into the waters of the oasis. He heard a word whispered over the water, "Petsuchos." Kejital rolled his eyes and closed them. He wasn’t in the mood for any more ritual shenanigans, he was going to relax in the water, and figure the rest out tomorrow.
