Ugh, I really don't like vine charcoal myself. I prefer using good chunky ground charcoal and really layering it one thick. I'm very messy when it comes to charcoal, but I have figured out a few different techniques to work with it. I enjoy the rough strokes and almost clay-like methods you can get when its thicker, really working in there with the medium. A friend of mine during college let me borrow an electric eraser once and I found those are very very nice for working with reductive details on charcoal. Its probably the most techy thing I work with for charcoals. lol Just the little battery operated ones.
