This past weekend, I spent a total of 14 hours, broken up into two 7 hour blocks on Saturday, February 28th, and Sunday, March 1st, taking a course at the UBC Botanical Garden to make myself an Adirondack Backpack basket. These are large, wearable baskets, traditionally made from split Ash growth rings (a labour-intensive materials preparation) in up-state New York, and surrounding east coastal states. It was murderous on my hands, which got cut up and very sore, but I seemed to have recovered well enough, and I am excited about making another one!
Here are three of the construction stages (I wish I took more photos!), from beginning though the turning up stage, and finally to the strapped & completed backpack. I hand-riveted & ringed the straps.
