You'll never look back after using it. ;3 Also, the lens I have cost $600 Cdn.. Double the standard lens. With this once, I can maintain a constant aperture across zoom distance whereas a normal lens will (as I understand it) change the aperture automatically depending on zoom distance. I bought the camera body separately. And yes, I also got it for the f2.8. There might be ones that have a lower f-stop but those would have been out of my budget.
As much as I'd love to have a 2.8, 18-55mm isn't versatile enough for me. My current lens is 18-200mm, and I'm all over the place with zooming that thing with everything from up close at 18 to all the way out at 200. Down side is, it's an f3.5-5.6, so it does lose about a stop of light zooming all the way (actually, it gets to 5.6 around 120mm). And since my camera isn't full frame it has the 1.6x crop factor which also multiplies the F-stop to f8.96 equivalent. At MFF a couple years ago I rented a Tamron 24-70 f2.8, which was a really nice lens. Next one I try will be the 70-200 f2.8. I'd like to buy both, but either one alone is well outside my price range (especially if I bought the Canon versions). Unfortunately there's no such thing as an 18-200 f2.8! That would be sweet.
I'm toying with the idea of getting a full frame camera, but that would require me to get a new lens as well because the one I have is the Canon EF-S mount, and the full frame line is the EF mount. EF lenses can go on an EF-S body, but EF-S lenses can't go on an EF body.
