Only sometimes sleep is an escape. Sometimes the waking world is full of monsters, be them physical or rather just a construct of the brain. The monsters of the sun becomes more hateful and terrifying until the demons of sleep become that of comfort and safety. Then you easily choose the nightmares over the day.
