Parker the Barker: Un-Leash the Parker
Chapter 1: Down Boy
“Mom why do I have to have holes in the back of my shorts?” Parker asked.
His mom sighed and smiled “Because your tail may grow back again and I don’t want you to hurt your back again so if while your at camp it grows just push it through the hole”
Parker sighed and stared out the window letting out a small whimper before tapping himself on the head “No you are normal this week no dog no dog!” He said to himself.
Parker wasn’t crazy he had a condition called caninitus a fairly new condition that caused the brain to forget he was human. This would cause Parker to act like a dog and sometimes his body even became part dog. There was even a time when he was five that he had a full tail and was walking on four paws.
Parker looked up “Mom am I a freak?”
She stopped the car and turned around “Sweetie you are not a freak. You are my sweet boy” She said
“But mom my brain thinks I am a dog and sometimes I look like a dog that means I am a freak!” He replied whimpering a little before tapping himself again
His mom held his hand “Parker you are not a freak. You are just different but different is good I mean wouldn’t the world be boring if we were all the same.” Parker nodded “Good now come on let’s get you to your cabin you are going to love camp Lakeview” She said as they got out of the car.
As Parker and his mom walked up to his cabin Parker felt an urge in his throat and he began to sweat because he knew what the urge was. He wanted to bark! “No not now I want to at least be normal for a day”
He suddenly felt himself growl as a long haired man came up “Hey buddy my name is Conrad and I am your counselor”
He coughed “Hi I’m rrrrr Parker”
Conrad looked confused for a moment but then smiled “Well Parker we are going to have a lot of fun were going to hike, play paintball, make smores and even swim won’t that be fun?
Parker started scratching his neck and began to panic “Mom, I need my collar where is it? Mom I need it fast”
Mom got out a spider man pattern collar and latched it around her son’s neck and began to pat his head “Its ok Parker its ok” The itch stopped and Parker sighed at the stare Mr. Conrad gave
His mom smiled “It helps him with anxiety” She said
Parker rolled his eyes “Great this week is already starting out rrrrough!” He said plopping on the bed as Mr. Conrad and his mom went outside.
Chapter 2: Throw me a bone
Parker continued laying on his bunk scratching at the collar. He hadn’t been there five minutes and already the dog inside was acting up he closed his eyes when he heard a voice “Hey kid!” Parker looked up to see a black haired boy with a buck tooth smile looking at him
“Huh wha?” Parker said as he rolled off the bed on to the hard floor
“Sorry didn’t mean to scare you my name is Zane” the boy said offering his hand.
“Um I’m Parker” He replied and nuzzled his hand with his head
“Umm ok Parker wow I guess you hit your head pretty hard. Hey I brought a Frisbee you want to go toss it with me?” Zane asked
Parker’s tongue wanted to hang out but he fought it back then he thought maybe by doing some normal things with other kids the dog might calm down “Um sure” he replied and the two boys headed outside the cabin.
The two boys tossed the Frisbee back and forth for a while and talked about different things. Zane explained how he loved to hunt and to watch football while Parker told him about his love for being outside, eating ice cream, and listening to music. They were enjoying each other and laughing until one toss when Parker accidentally caught the Frisbee in his mouth.
Parker began to panic “Oh no, what if he thinks this is weird, what if he laughs at me” he suddenly felt a stretch at his back then it stopped when Zane patted him on the back.
“Haha show off I can’t get anything by you come on I think it is time for dinner
“Umm ok I will be there in a minute I just need to get something” Parker replied
Parker ran back in the cabin and took out his tablet and looked at some old pictures of him. He saw ones of him panting and playing but then the picture he hoped would never happen again came across the screen. There he was with full dog paws, tail, ears, and a black nose “No, the dog won’t win this week”
“Come on Park!” Zane yelled!
Parker turned off the tablet and headed out with Zane down the hill.
As they arrived Parker saw that his favorite food was one the menu, it was baked chicken with rice and green beans. For most kids this was a cause for joy but Parker he sighed knowing it was moments like this the dog wanted to come out.
“Just stay calm, if you are calm the dog is calm you are a boy not a dog a boy!” He kept whispering to himself. To his surprise he got through the line and dinner fairly easy. He met the three other boys in his cabin.
First there was Allen who swore that he could jump higher and run faster than anyone. Then there was Christian who wanted to find some more bugs to take home and add to his collection. Lastly there was Kent who’s dad actually was the camp director but he made everyone swear not to tell anyone. The five boys joked, talked, and goofed around with their counselor and Parker was finally starting to feel at ease.
Chapter 3: Ruff Night
That night Parker was calmer than he could ever remember. There had been no dog issues since the Frisbee thing and camp was a lot of fun. He signed up for archery and wilderness since Zane was in both and at the campfire he got to tell a ghost story and have yummy smores. He smiled as he laid down and went to sleep and that’s when things got weird and scary.
He dreamt he woke up in the cabin but while the other boys were drinking out of water bottles someone through a bowl of it toward him “Go ahead puppy drink your water!” the voice said. Parker started to scoot back and bumped into a bag of dog food “Aww looks like puppy is ready for something to eat” He tugged on his collar but then felt a yank and saw a leash attatched to a scary figure laughing as he was dragged and the boys even Zane joined in laughing and he felt himself change and let out a terriefied howl.
He sat up shivering feeling himself. Parker then looked around and saw everyone else still asleep he quickly grabbed his tablet and video called his older brother Tony “Parker why are you up it’s late”
Parker held back tears “I had that dream again” He said
His older brother ran a hand through his beard and smiled “Bud do you remember when you dogged really bad what did I say when I was calming you down”
Parker gulped “That no matter fur, tail, or ears I am still me”
Tony nodded “Listen bro I don’t know a lot about the condition you have but you are still my brother and you can control the dog, but even if he comes out if those boys are your friends they will stay your friends because they like you on the inside ok”
Parker wiped his eyes “Ok, Tony could you play your guitar?”
Tony smiled he knew the only thing other than the collar to calm his little brother was him playing country music on his guitar “Of course buddy just plug in the headphones first”
Parker nodded and sat there watching his brother play until he was calm enough to sleep “Good night Tony and thanks”
Tony smiled “Good night you mutt haha”
Chapter 4: The Prank
The next day was the first full day of camp for Parker and he loved it. Aside from a few barks slipping out the dog remained calm then as the camp fires were extinguished he saw Zane run up to him very excited.
“What’s going on dude you look like you just found gold”
Zane smiled “Oh it is so much better bro!” He replied as he held up a key. “Do you know what this is?”
Parker scratched his chin “It looks like a key”
Zane grinned “It is not just any key it is a key to the supply closet. My older brother said if you find it, then it is like a free pass to prank.”
“What are you saying?” Parker asked
“Parks my friend we are going to tepee the girl cabin”
Parker smiled another normal kid activity this camp thing moght be what he needed to quiet the dog for a while. “Ok but if we are going to do this then we will need to get the rest of the cabin”
“Way ahead of you” Zane replied as he signaled and the guys came out with backpacks full of toilet paper and plastic wrap. “Guys lets get to pranking” Parker said as they ran down the path.
They got up to the girls cabin and heard music playing “Dang it” said Christian “They are still up”
“Looks like we will have to wait” Kent said
Parker grinned “Good thing I have this” He pulled out his tablet and turned on a movie.
“Parks in with the movie” The boys said as they watched until finally the girls lights went out.
“Ok boys it is time” Allen said as he got up and along with Kent began to wrap the bottom of their cabin with plastic wrap.
As they were doing that Parker began to wrap toilet paper around trees. The boys did everything they could to contain themselves as they finished teepeeing the cabin.
“What are you guys doing” A voice said. The boys turned and saw their counselor Conrad. “You boys are pranking the girls huh. Well you will need the finishing touches” He smiled tossing them each a can of silly string the boys smiled as they and their counselors sprayed around and all over the cabin and then ran back.
Parker smiled “I can’t believe you let us do that Conrad” Conrad laughed
“Well how can you have camp without a prank right The boys laughed as they stayed up til four in the morning sharing stories about different pranks.
