I think it would be better with the comma, yes. As for "stay a girl," it would reduce the possibility of another interpretation. For example, "only stay girl" could mean their mannerisms, talk, walk, reactions to events, etc., such as a boy that left a girl because she became too butch for him. Isn't it wonderful how imprecise the English language actually is?
