Summary:
After a long period of boredom, frustration, anger, and even a little bit (err, lot) of depression, I finally started mucking around with Apophysis again. This is the result of me testing one of the scripts I downloaded (The Mini Hearts Script by Shortgreenpigg on DA (Link to his userpage: http://shortgreenpigg.deviantart.com). I had to tweak it a bit and zoom in much further than I normally would like to - it adds an ass-load to the render time - but I think it was well worth it. I might do a higher-res one, later. Maybe.
Time:
Approximately thirty minutes to get the fractal and adjust it, about an hour and a half to render it.

lol it just takes practice. Believe it or not, I've done over 50 of these things - very few actually make it to this account. XD. Well, I should rephrase - it takes practice, good plugins, and excellent scripts that are easy to tweak with the editor in Apophysis. You should try it, btw - search for it on sourceforge.net. ^^ And I'll add you to my DA account as soon as I get back (have to leave in a few mins). Just keep in mind that I'm slightly less picky about the quality of my work over there. XD.
H'mm. Have you tried temporarily removing any additional filters/plugins (I forgot what they're called) you've installed, re-installing photoshop, then adding them back one at a time until you find the problem?
(PS: paint sucks. Try Gimp - it's very similar to photoshop, but free. And a helluva lot better than gimp... o.0 You can find the latest version of the program here: ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/.)
