Liches are undead spirits that inhabit some portion of their own anatomy and maintain all of the magical power they had when living, though, now, that power is twisted to malice. They are ruled by the Lich Council. The Lich Council is made up of four members and the High Lich. Each of the members hides their face, or lack thereof, behind a mask, both as a sign of status and to hide whatever of their identity remains beyond death.
The Blue Lich holds sway over the powers of necromancy, making him, truly, a Lich's lich. He alone holds the power to create new liches, and to keep the council's power balanced, he can never be the High Lich. The only surviving portion of his mortal anatomy is four finger bones and a segment of rib.
He's on his way to one of the meetings the Council holds in a deep catacombs beneath a keep that lies in ruin.

Well, what I was actually thinking is that all liches in my continuum would attached their lifeforce to a certain number of objects [I was thinking three, but maybe a different number could be traditional], and to truly defeat them you need to destroy them all. But I was thinking originally of his heart, his skull, his spine. But a RIB? Dear god, how many adventures would think to crush every one of a mans RIBS?
And they would actually be able to regenerate the rest of their body from those part, with another ritual, using something best described as a human stew. Nothing regenerated would be... exceptional, though.

Ah. okay. That works for me. My version of liches is a bit more simple. I don't use the relic concept. These guys die and just go on using their bodies. The liches in this are more or a nebulous ghostly form and whatever remains of their bodies remains where it belongs in their anatomy until it's all gone. Once all the parts are destroyed, they can continue being ghosts but without a physical component to their existence, they can no longer channel magic. Most choose to just die at that point. Natural decay works on them, pretty much like it would on any corpse that wasn't doing the required activities to support life, i.e: Breathing, eating, having a pulse...
