As many of you know, the highly-touted motion picture version of "Watchmen" is now playing throughout the USA (and soon, the world), with Zack Snyder in the director's chair. But did you know that one of the earlier proposed directors for the film was "Monty Python" member Terry Gilliam?!
As part of my ongoing series of photo-ops with big names in show-biz (and other venues), here's a picture of myself and Mr. Gilliam, taken back in 1985, as his (then) latest movie "Brazil" made its debut in New York City.
Of course, this wasn't the first time I'd met him. Back in the 1970s, I got his autograph backstage (at an off-Broadway theater), after a performance of "Monty Python Live". Then, the next time we'd met was in 1981 at another NYC cinema for the debut of one of his first solo directorial efforts, "Time Bandits" (where he'd signed a copy of the giant book of the film). And my last encounter with him was in 1989, where we'd reunited at a Creation (comic book) Convention, once again in the 'Big Apple'. He was there to promote his next film following "Brazil", "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". (This time, he was kind enough to autograph the photo you are looking at now, although I'd cut it off said signature below our heads.) In return, I gave him a personalized anagram of his last movie, which I'd created myself...
As some of you know, I'm a member of the National Puzzlers' League (a non-profit organization), where I love to construct appropriate enigmas - especially anagrams. And the one I'd made for Terry was one of my best efforts, as it gives an apropos description of the movie. See if you don't agree with me...
IT'S ALL GRIMLY BIZARRE! = TERRY GILLIAM'S "BRAZIL"
Having been a long-time fan of the cut-out animator-turned-director, I was truly hoping that he would have the opportunity of working on "Watchmen", when the rumors first came out in the late 1980s (and again in the 1990s); but it never came to be. Still, he went on to direct other films including "Twelve Monkeys" with Bruce Willis and "The Brothers Grimm" with Matt Damon and (the late) Heath Ledger.

The first time I saw Terry Gilliam's animated bits wasn't even on "Monty Python's Flying Circus" (when the BBC series began airing on PBS around the early 1970s). It was the title sequences and bumpers in the midst of "The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine" (when this British series aired on ABC, also back in the early 1970s). My two favorite cartoons, back then, were "The Miracle of Flight" ("Fly!" *kick* "Aaaaaargh!") and "Nini Nana and the Two Nunus" (which was also featured in the stage show "Monty Python Live!")
To be fair, Mr. Gilliam removed himself from "Watchmen"; he'd talked to Alan Moore about the film, and Moore didn't want it made at all (understandably, after the last two of his works to come to th big screen). So he went back and told the studio it was "unfilmable".
Of course, as the new film proves, that never stopped Hollywood yet.

That also hasn't stopped Hollywood from lampooning films like "Watchmen" either. Keep your eyes open for "Supercapers", another movie parody about the superhero genre. I predict that it (like "Watchmen") will be the kind of flicker people will rush across town to avoid!
Just checked the website, and no obvious Watchmen references jump out at me. There's a furry character, though: A minotaur named "The Cretan".
