The Sepeth of Machemba
Years before I ever joined FA I was a fairly active member of deviantArt, where I worked with my good friend Nukawin (formerly Ginger2000) to create a sci-fi universe for a novel I intended to write called Planet of Fate. Over time my work lost views and I eventually got very bad writer's block which is still unfortunately prevalent today. I did remember, however, that I did write up some of the lore and details for a few of the different alien species, one of which being a species of snake people that I realised would fit very well within the furry community, and so I've decided to share this information with you all here today. You'll likely have questions, so feel free to ask, but there are some things I should make clear right away.
Q: Can I have an OC that is this species of yours?
A: Yes. Generally with things like this it'll follow a similar rule set that the creator for Sergals has set up for the Sergal, but to summarize; as long as you give credit where credit is due you may create a Sepeth OC and you may commission art of this OC. The Character belongs entirely to you, but the species is mine and I would appreciate being recognized for it, please and thank you.
Without further adieu, I'll post the contents of the rtf. file down below for your convenience:
Machemba is the second of three planets orbiting a yellow star in the same classification as Sol. It orbits in about the same distance as Venus in relation to Sol, if only slightly farther out. It is a dense planet relatively the same size of earth, but with a slightly larger mass. As a result gravity is higher on the planet's surface, resulting in most life there evolving to be large and creatures having nearly indescructable bones. The planet is extremely hot and humid, it's atmosphere full of greenhouse gasses. It's dotted with three or four small oceans, the rest of the planet covered in dense tropical forests with lakes and rivers. The planet is also very geologically active and volcanic, with at least two of its volcanoes in a state of constant eruption. As a result of this, the soil all around the planet is full of nutrient-rich volcanic ash, making all the landmasses exceptionally fertile for the planet's flora. Machemba's atmosphere is also oxygen rich, making thunderstorms a danger since lightning can often ignite the air around it, though the fires are soon-after smothered out by the mildly acidic rain.
The Sepeth are Machemba's dominant species. A sentient species, the Sepeth are massive bi-pedal lizards highly resembling snakes, down to the teeth with two prominent retractable fangs. The average height of an adult Sepeth is twelve feet, though they can range from eight to fourteen feet. They are somewhat tribal in culture, yet very intelligent in their creativity and use of tools. They live in large homes made of bricks baked in kilns from Machemba's ashen soil. For clothes, the men usually only wear a simple loin cloth, often accompanied by armor crafted from the bones of the native fauna that they hunt. Males also sometimes wear capes and/or cloaks with or without their armor. The women, only distinguishable through their head feathers and more androgynous body shape since reptillians do not have mammary glands, often wear crude skirts, dresses or bikinis made from cloth or leather. Due to the harshness of their world, the Sepeth are covered in a thick hide of scales, with large and sturdy bones.
Culturally, the Sepeth favor a monarchy as the political system, all Sepeth being governed by a chieftan whom they typically refer to as a king or queen, all the while employing a Caste system. Oddly enough, though, all Castes in Sepeth culture are treated equally, and no Sepeth is born into a Caste, but placed into a Caste through a coming of age ceremony once their apparent natural abilities are made known. The Sepeth have a polytheistic belief system, consisting of four deities. Kagrinor, god of wrath, destruction and ambition often believed to cause Machemba's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Athelle, goddess of water, wind, light and sky, often represented as the Sun watching over all through the clouds. Gierdana, goddess of the earth, plants, and living creatures that inhabit it, often represented by the Amphedyne Flower, a flower native only to Machemba with leathery wine-red petals and a glossy center which resembles the eye of a serpent, a vibrant green 'iris' with a dark brown vertical slit in the center. Finally is Phatos, the Father-King of Creation and Life, said to be lost in the night sky, each star representing an eye with which to search for the world he created, to one day return and lead his creations as the righteous king. He is often represented by an obelisk, which is said to be the shape of the beacon with which he will eventually use to return to the world. The Sepeth have temples dedicated to each deity in every major settlement, though all four can be found in an outward facing circle around a large garden with an obelisk at the center in the Sepeth capital of Zu'ultin. The obelisks usually have three sides, on which each deity's symbol is inscribed at the top and their teachings are written beneath.
The Sepeth have their own written language and alphabet. They still use and prefer their ancient dialect with an alphabet made up of symbols first created by being scratched into wood, before later carved into stone. While they have discovered and created paper, it is difficult to make and harder to maintain in their world's climate and environment, so they don't use it often, only when something needs to be written urgently and nothing else is available.
Most Sepeth men usually become warriors, though that is just their most common Caste as many women become worriors as well. They are also most commonly seen as builders, explorers, and weapon and tool forgers. Most women usually become priestesses or herbalists, weavers, advisors, artists, and most importantly wives. While gaining a spouse and a child are considered to be great accomlishments and honors, homosexuality is not generally frowned upon in Sepeth society as long as the individual can still contribute to the well being of everyone else. They are treated equally as members of society, and even have the option to marry other homosexuals and adopt children unfortunate enough to have lost their parents. To them anything that exists, even if out of the norm or beyond what they're used to is an intentional part of creation from Phatos, and is not theirs to judge. Some women also may become what the Sepeth refer to as 'Dragon Witches,' uncommon but prominent female individuals who are able to exhale fire and control and manipulate it via a type of pyrokiniteic ability. Dragon Witches are often both feared and respected by others for their strong connection to Kagrinor, and as a result are taken and tought to use thier abilities responsibly at a young age.
While usually calm and friendly, the Sepeth are also very territorial, and most warriors do love a good fight. As a result small wars and conflicts aren't uncommon. Due to their prideful and territorial nature, theft is extremely offensive to the Sepeth, often considered a worse crime than murder punishable by lifetime imprisonment and torture, exile, or even death. Kidnapping is also considered a form of theft, as well as a mark of shame or cowardice, as a spouse or child is often considered to be a more valuable porperty than even gemstones or a home. Retaliations for these crimes from one city to another usually involve sacking and integration, with the conquered city's citizens folded into society again if they surrendered peacefully. Unclaimed territory is also often a subject of conflict, though the losers will usually respect the victor upon defeat and look elsewhere for new lands. Being a prideful and hot-tempered race, they can also often be easily offended, which may often lead to a challenge of single combat, either to the death or submission, submission being the more common outcome as untimely death in petty disputes is seen as wasteful of life's full potential, and is only justified in the most dire of insults and crimes.
Individuals can sometimes often be associated with a variety of gemstones to denote strong personal traits, Caste, and favored deity. For example, a warrior with a love of swimming and being in the rain might have a lapis lazuli encrusted into his helmet. Since he was in the warrior Caste, he would also have a ruby encrusted there as well. If he worshipped Phatos the most, a diamond would be encrusted there too. It isn't limited to three gemstones either, and often the weapons, armor and clothes can encorperate various gemstones into their design.
The Sepeth forge most of their weapons and tools from the bones of slain animals, and even foes if they were respected enough to be deemed worthy of having a use after death. They craft swords from sharpened bone with a carved and polished tone hilt, the owner's name and representive color gemstone(s) encrusted into it. They also often use shields, or sometimes even broadswords or warhammers that require both hands. As for ranged weapons, they use bows and crossbows with spider silk as string, since spiders can be immense in size on Machemba and one strand of silk could be used to effectively bind a prisoner's hands together and support his or her weight. The Sepeth also have what they refer to as magisters, mages, warlocks, wizards, or witches, who have some form of inherent kinesis ability. These particular individuals carry wooden or bone staves with an ornate mineral or stone encrusted with gems at the top, often linked to somehow amplifying their abilities.
Technology wise the Sepeth are nowhere near TV or Internet, let alone a common refridgerator, relying on salt to preserve meats. They mostly use various tools in their everday lives, from knives, saws, axes, needles, stone ovens and kilns, to complex mechanisms such as irrigation systems and aqueducts. In various attempts to search the stars for Phatos, they have created telescopes, and one project had seen them building a massive stone monolith-like temple filled with plants, food, water, and two small gold obelisks, the plants producing oxygen to breath. Several Magnomagisters specializing in magnokinesis, along with a small settlement, were tasked with entering the blackness of the night sky and reaching Machemba's small arid moon that actually had a small oxygen rich atmosphere capable of supporting life, and sending back one of the gold obelisks as proof they were successful. Months later after the monolith ship had flown off into the sky, a gold obelisk indeed fell back to Machemba's surface, the explorers having successfully planted some of the plants and establishing a thriving colony there, tapping into underground sources of water and actually making the Sepeth capable of some limited space flight, a group of dedicated Sepeth thinkers trying to build better 'ship' designs to eventually fly farther.
