Yeah what Leo said. He also learns Spanish and Portuguese because the Spanish and the Portuguese have a very long history of doing trades with the Japanese. Sure there was the Dutch but the Spanish and Portuguese were there in Japan until the Tokugawa shogunate created seclusion laws that limited European influences because he and the Japanese were getting fed up with the Europeans trying to convert the Japanese into Christianity and how that threatens the Japanese culture. Eventually, the Europeans were driven out of Japan leaving the country isolated so they could do things on their own will without reactions from the foreigners.
