Here is one of my treasure. Why going through all my artworks one day I have found my first sketches of my characters. Here is my Sonic oc's beginning. How this character got started. I can't remember the exact age and date of when I drew this ancient artwork, so I mostly went by the styles I use to have back then and did comparisons. I hardly ever shown my old artworks due to a high range of embarrassment. But I think its time to show that every artist did not start out perfect at all. I started out as any other person who was big fan of Sonic. You know, making up a character from the get go and not giving them an actual story. What surprised me however that I never stopped developing my oc. I just kept trying and trying until I had something I was happy with. So here we go. I have never shown anyone these. Not a soul, so welcome to the vault!
Blue Cat Era:
Tommi didn't start out as a fossa at all. Instead she was a blue silver haired cat. I call this the silver haired or the blue cat age. I was a big fan of scifi, and wanted to giver her a look of a science fiction character. She didn't even had a name from the beginning either. It took me a while to name her. I was on and off with this character through out the years. Her personality back then was that she was a shy, quiet, book-ish type of girl. Complete with big round glasses. She didn't exactly had a story of her own either. It was hard to draw in the sonic style, since that was the very first time I tried to do so. I either wanted her setting be on Sonic's home world in the comics, which was Mobius at the time, or take place on a space station. I only just drew the character.
Collipso the Sea Dragon era:
As I got older, I went back to looking at me oc, and decided to change her species. Back then, it seemed that everyone was drawing hedgehogs, foxes, wolves, or cats. So I went a species that was hardly ever used back then. This was when I finally gave her a name, and it was Collipso. It was also when her signature " Jack Skeleton" barrette in her hair came into the mix with her style. Plus it was when I beginning to stick with her messy hair style with the hair band. I decided to draw her with high pants or leggings. This became a style that I stuck with for a while. Even from the beginning her age was ranging from 18-at least 22. This was also when I wanted to draw a little parody Chaos in the Sonic universe, and created little Beebee. Plus this was when I started draw her a friend, like the rabbit character in that on page comic. And this was when I tried to create a bio for her. I still couldn't draw in Sonic style, so I just went my own way instead. The character was still a shy booky type. She had style but needed more on personality.
Dark skin era/ Modern Tommi:
Now this was when I traded her scales for fur, and collipso became nameless once again. Back then, I thought maker her a dragon might have been a bit overpowered. And that's when I started to learn about what a too much of a perfect character was. This stage was kind of experimental. This was when I tried to give Tommi more of a take of African american features. Plus I toned down her colors to give off a more modern look. And this was also when I thought about making her older and I used Rouge the Bat for reference. At first I wanted her to be a cheetah, but I didn't stick with this style for too long. This was when her entire shape began to take form, even her hair has been shortened. I liked the hair style and the color of her fur, but it was something I just couldn't settle on. There was much more I wanted to do with the character. She look pretty, but still lacked a solid personality, and setting. Plus the colors of her clothes didn't sit right with me either.
Magical Witch Era:
Now this was when I decided to give her a slight make over, and an experimental story. I was big fan of Nightmare Before Christmas obviously, so I tried to give her a look that would match her hair clip. This was when her look and colors was coming together. I gave her more spots, bigger ears, and longer tail, and perky Halloween look. I believe this was when I settled on her species as a fossa instead of a cat. This was also the longest era when I started to get better at drawing in detail. I even gave her a scythe weapon, an idea I received from the Soul Eater series. Back then her name was 'Tommy' with a 'Y' instead of an 'I', and this was when I drew Dawn the echidna into the mix. Back then her name was Dawny, and she had a spiked hammer for a weapon. I did had fun with this one, it would have interesting, but I still young, and that's when I learned what OP was. Plus I still didn't give her a solid story or setting, but I liked the look of them both. This was also when I started to get better at coloring with color pencil. The age before Prisma.
Goth Era:
After going on and off with the character, and getting older, this was when I decided to tone down the whole magical bit. When was when I wanted to try to do something a little dark, and when I finally gave her the name Tommi, and it stuck. This was when I stuck with the blue and black hues, and her overall pants. I had a pair of those overalls and wanted to know how they would look on her, and I liked it. (As a matter of fact I liked all the clothing I drew her in.) I even gave Dawn a make over as well. As you can see I liked the hair style but I couldn't choose the color for it. Then I though of going back to giving her the black hair. And this was when I learned about the style of Steampunk, and I drew her in a corsette and long boots. I was getting there with her personality. I decided to make her a brainy yet polite type.
Tommi Guntz the Spotted Fossa-Today:
Finally, after many years, I have finally settled on Tommi Guntz. My steampunk sonic oc. It was amazing seeing how much I improved. I drew her friends, her own love interest, personality, and a her own universe. It was quite a journey, and it's still going :).
All my characters I have ever drawn started out this way. You should see my character, Coalette and her friends started out XD. I did not start out professionally at all! And creating my own Sonic character was just as challenging as creating my own characters. I had to learn what OP was and what a Mary-Sue is, and learn how to avoid drawing something like them. So yeah, this was how Tommi got started spots and all ^v^.
