Dear L,
My name is Nancy and I have a problem with my friend. I am writing this as she is sleeping on my bed right now. I just have to get this off my chest because it is keeping me up. My friend Sam is going down hill over the past few weeks because of the suckie economy. It is effecting everyone right now, even me, but she is really getting slammed because of it.
A few weeks ago, she was laid off from work because of the companies 'intelligent' reasons and excuses. She was the only one that was laid off out of 30. It is because she is making more money than the new managers there because she has worked at the company for a number of years. They sent her home with no money and no Unemployment Information. They really gave her a hard time.
The same day, she called me and told me what happened. I was obligated to come to her place and be with her. I took her out to dinner and watched a movie with her. I told her that she should start looking for another job when she can. For the past few weeks, she has been keeping things to herself, bottling up feelings and the truth from me. Even though she was quiet, I could tell that something was wrong.
Today, she called me in a state of panic. She told me that she wanted to kill herself because she is running out of money and no job has called her back. She is afraid that she will not be able to pay her rent anymore and buy food for herself. I rushed over to her place, picked her up and took her back to my apartment. She was crying and shaking throughout the trip. She continued to yell and scream at me about how she has no future and no one is willing to hire her, not even fast food joints. It came to a point where I had to hold her down so she wouldn't hurt herself, hoping that she would relax. After awhile, she settled down.
I didn't want to leave her out of my sight, so I waited in the bathroom as she took a hot shower and got dressed. i then gave her some leftovers from last night and she devoured it quickly. She told me that she hasn't eaten anything filling for days because she is saving her money for rent. Even though I am having a hard time at my job with very low pay and small amount of hours, I told her to stay with me for a few days and eat from my cabinet.
She is now asleep after trembling and crying some more. Her outburst caught me off guard and now I am a bit shaken up as well. That is why I am writing to you. I need your help. I need your guidance in this matter. I can only do so much to protect her, but I can't be there for her 24/7 or I will be completely drained.
Should she just move into my apartment until she finds a job? If she does, I will be in trouble by the landlord and/or my bills will go up to a price I can't afford. Should I give her half of my money in my back account?
Please relpy. I am very worried for my friend. These are terrible times for us and we are all suffering under the harsh economy...
Thank you,
Nancy K.

A heart felt and very contemporary and relevant piece...
The character's expressions and body language really reflects the story ^^ enough that you can establish the characters and a general problem without knowing the specifics (so the extra stuff in the text really hits harder)
There is a good balance in the writing between what the character chooses to tell and what they don't which is very realistic for a letter (you don't get their entire friendship history for example). The repetition works well in the letter form and enforces the helplessness. good work!
The situation is a hard one for both characters it seems but i hope they find some way to help each other through it - like we all have to do generally in life ^^
