I looked to my hand. My weapon had become something else, a reflection of myself-- it, too, had returned to its true form. Gripping it tightly, I focused my thoughts.

My strength.

My pain.

I raised my spear and guided its point toward the monster which assailed us. The black husk could not find it within itself to do more than stand in wait, smoky red eyes squinted in sick anticipation. This was a day I had hoped for years would never come, but knew it would despite all efforts to forget, to hide, or otherwise.

Why would it not?

It was me. Its likeness of myself was telltale.

...It's what I once was. What I tried to overcome. Tried to forget.

Without so much as blinking, I released the light gathered at the spearhead, letting loose all of my anger, my sadness, and now my resolve. In a bright burst, even its sinister grin grew obscured.

No longer would I be followed by my past. No longer would it taunt me.

I had become whole.
