"There was a room full of five people named A, B, C, D, and E. A detective came in to interview them. During his rounds, the lights went out and when they came back on, his throat was slit. Before he died and after, there were the same five people in the room. All five people were asked what they were doing during the murder. A-ya said 'I was doing some reading before it suddenly went dark and I dozed off. I didn't know he was dead until I woke.' Person B said 'He was murdered? Really...? He wasn't a bad guy though. To cut him with a knife like that...'. C said 'Ahh, I want to play outside. I was just here for some tools, I don't know anything about him.'. D said 'Calm down... I can't believe he was dragged here. Those footprints were big, so it must have been a man.' Lastly, E said 'Yeah, I was here, but I left right away. He wasn't even here then.'"
Who was the culprit?
( If you can guess the right answer, I'll draw a little thing of your character and the Sphinx)
Edit: here's a hint. There's more than one culprit.
Also like any other Sphinx riddle. You must answer two more when you get this one right

Person A is not suspcious, because they suffer from sudden onset nyctophilic sleep disorder, causing them to black out in darkness.
Person B is not suspicious because of their emotional reaction.
Person C is suspicious because they say they didn't know about him, despite being there to be interviewed.
We do not have enough information to confirm Person D's testimony. Occam's razor dictates they are not the culprit.
We do not have enough information to confirm Person E's testimony. Occam's razor dictates they are not the culprit.
From this dataset, we can conclude with confidence, that the other 4 people are trying to frame person C for the murder.

Attempt 2
Person D (who is presumably a woman), seems to be trying to direct attention away from themselves by mentioning the presumed gender of the footprint maker, despite gender coming up nowhere else in the riddle (with exception to the detective).
In addition, telling peole to calm down and everything could also be a ploy to instil a sense of authority and trust amongst the other people to divert suspcion further.

You haven't really given a lot of clues to deduce from, so it's all conjecture at this point, not really a riddle.
A riddle is a puzzle you have all the pieces to but need to arrange the information around until you have an answer.
This... is random information with little evidence.

Why not just suggest that the detective built a machine that brutally cut his throat and stabbed himself 10 times in the back.
I know, I was joking. To figure out the culprit I think further cross examination is required!

tons late (and just writing to try how right or wrong my guess would be ^^;) but
. . . well, kinda sounds like B and D did give themselfs away?
if they literally just were told he was murdered/his throat was cut... but B explicitly says 'who would cut him like that with a knive' and D saying he 'was dragged here' . . . like . . . in case they indeed just know that the detective[?] was murdered?
so... would guess for B and D?
