An excerpt from the Journals of Sally Acorn given color and context:
"What do you think it means?" Amos asked.
"What?" Sally asked in response.
"That symbol there." Bannister said pointing to the roughly circular symbol affixed in the top center of the room. "It was put there for a reason.
Sally approached it with her Ruger Plainsman resting on her shoulder. "Well, it certainly seems important. The Forerunners were big on symbolism." She cocked her head and tried to make sense of it. "Maybe it was a religious symbol? You know, like a cross?"
"Maybe it's their version?" Amos suggested.
Sonic was out observing the waterfall that cascaded outside of the temple. He was not interested in discussing Forerunner religion, if this was what the symbol was even about.
"Look at this." Sally said, pointing to the lines. "Everything here is carved, maybe with handtools, but this is metal."
"Yeah." Amos said. "It's newer."
Sally shrugged. "Maybe that means this place was always a temple and maybe this... whatever this is, came afterwards?" She thought that it had to do with the ring in some way. "If these are Forerunner ruins."
"You don't think they are?"
"I'm just wondering, that's all." she said. "Well, Forerunners kept a lot of species on the rings. Maybe someone lived here at one time?"
"Like a race of people?"
"Maybe." she said. "Maybe they worshipped this." She stepped closer. "The symbol is over the hologram of the ring. That's no accident."
"Makes you think, right?" Amos asked, one hand on his lip, the other cupping his elbow.
"About what?" Sally asked.
"You said the Forerunners were extinct, right?"
"Yeah."
"Looks like this symbol didn't do them any good then."
It was as forward as Sally had ever heard Amos. For a brief moment, he had gotten rid of his usual demeanor and had been completely serious. Sally never saw him like that, even back when he was a suitor. Why did that symbol make him feel like that? On top of that, Sally got a chill down her spine when she locked onto it. She could see a string of writing in spirals. Forerunner text she couldn't understand. It spelt something that she couldn't read, but three glyphs in the center seemed to blast something at her. Whatever this meant and whoever worshipped it, she could feel that there was far too much history surrounding this symbol. She would see it from now on whenever Forerunners were involved. It would chill her every time she saw it from here on out.
"Come on." she said. Her voice reverberated on the ancient walls. She gripped her rifle. "Let's keep moving. I don't want to stay here anymore.
