Well, the verb "ganbaru" is to try your best, so ganbarimasu is the masu form of that verb (which will often appear at the end of the sentence), using the masu form implies the action of it (the dictionary form (ganbaru) could be used too, informally). So basically, what I said was "I'll try my best!"
Furthermore, aside from the meaning of the word, ganbaru is also used much as we would use "good luck" in English. For that, it is put into the te form, becoming ganbate. This form is used for telling others to do things. So then, the exchange would be:
"Ganbate!"
"Ganbarimasu/ganbaru!"
Meaning "try your best!" and "I will!" respectively =P
