I asked because several years ago, I saw a guy on a TV show make a copy of a statue, using the "lost wax" method.
Take an original statue, cover it with wax, make a prototype wax copy, them make a mold around the wax statue.
When the mold is fired to harden it, the wax melts and runs out, leaving an impression in the mold material.
(Hence the wax is "lost.")
