A bull elk crosses the spray river in Banff National Park.
The fuzz on his antlers is called velvet. It’ll come off in magnificent, bloody strands in the fall just in time for the bone beneath to harden for the rutting season where males will fight each other for females.
The antlers will drop off after the rut is over and next year a new pair will grow.
