This is for
marinaneira's birthday. Happy birthday Marina! I'm sorry it's a little late!
... I am an honest bunny. This drawing is REALLY late because I started it for her birthday LAST YEAR. I am so bad. I've finally finished it and here it is, and I hope it's OK.
People really do sketch the sky through telescopes, though they mostly have more modern ones than this, usually smaller Schmidt-Cassegrain or Maksutov-Cassegrain ones with motorized mounts, but I wanted to draw a pretty antique-looking brass refractor telescope like the one from Jupiter Ascendant. (And I have a telescope a lot like it sitting less than a yard away from me as I am typing this, though it's not brass. But it's a good visual reference.) Anyway, artistic license: a lot of the control knobs and the counterweight and other details from the telescope mount are left out, because they're just too complicated and fiddly. Also it would really be very dark, too dark to really distinguish character details. Also Marina is a squirrel-elf, not a quail-elf, but I seriously really could not help myself and gave her an ahoge. Sorry about that, Marina!

I dunno, Jennie, I can see a lot of sketching being done with a small refractor. I bought some gear last year, and I have a Meade DS-80 refractor, a William Optics 71mm refractor, and a GSO 6" Ritchey Chretien. Mine are set up for astrophotography, but I haven't really had a whole bunch of luck with them. I only get a couple of months out of the year to use them, July, August, September, here in the Pacific Northwest. July was pretty much a bust this year, and the skies are only starting to stay clear at night now.
I've seen some pretty awesome sketches over on Cloudy Nights website.
I'm sure Marina appreciates this, it's a great piece of art.
